How Do I Become A Carpenter While Attending College

Do you need a college degree to become a carpenter?

Sounds like you are doing the right thing in high school. I don't know any carpenters that have college degrees. I wonder if many of them even finished high school. Seems like the workmanship sucks, and everyone wants to claim to be a contractor. If there is such a thing as an apprenticeship program, that has got to be a good thing. Where I live, anyone can be a contractor if they just pass the Oregon contractor license class and exam, which only covers how to wright a contract, not how to do the work.

How do I become a carpenter?

First of all, you should decide which type of carpenter you want to become. This is because there are several types of carpenters in the carpentry occupation. They are as follows;

A FINISH CARPENTER OR A JOINER- This is one who does finish carpentry; that is, cabinetry, furniture making, fine woodworking, model building, instrument making, parquetry, joinery, or other carpentry where exact joints and minimal margins of error are important. Some large-scale construction may be of an exactitude and artistry that it is classed as finish carpentry.

A CARBINET MAKER is a carpenter who does fine and detailed work, specializing in the making of cabinets made from wood, wardrobes, dressers, storage chests, and other furniture designed for storage.

A SHIP CARPENTER specializes in shipbuilding, maintenance, and repair techniques (see also shipwright) and carpentry specific to nautical needs; usually the term refers to a carpenter who has a post on a specific ship. Steel warships as well as wooden ones need ship's carpenters, especially for making emergency repairs in the case of battle or storm damage.

A SCENIC CARPENTER in film-making, TV, and the theater builds and dismantles temporary scenery and sets.

A FRAMER is a carpenter that builds the skeletal structure or framework of buildings. Techniques include platform framing, balloon framing, or timber framing (which may be post-and-beam or mortise-and-tenon framing).

A FORMWORK CARPENTER creates the shuttering and falsework used in concrete construction.

Green carpentry is the specialization in the use of environmentally friendly,energy-efficient and sustainable sources of building materials to use in construction projects.

The second step is to scout for the suitable colleges or polytechnics that are tailor made for your area of interest. Alternatively you may choose to go to a carpentry workshop in your area and let a carpenter be your mentor or go as a intern

What college programs do you need to become a carpenter?

Carpentry is a vocational program rather than college level. Public community colleges typically offer non-college vocational programs in carpentry. Some may misleadingly call their vo-tech certificates "associates degrees", but the vocational programs will not transfer to a university like a true college level associates degree will. For example, you cannot get a true college degree in carpentry, welding, hairstyling, etc. You should visit a local public community college to sit down and talk to an adviser in their vo-tech area about your options related to carpentry.

How should I go about becoming a carpenter?

If you truly want to be a good carpenter and craftsman then I cannot recommend strongly enough that you attend the North Bennet Street School in the North End of Boston. It is considered one of the very best trade schools in the world. They will teach you how to love your craft, whether you are sharpening a chisel, making a blind dovetail or repairing a grand piano, this school is outstanding in every possible way. My father was a graduate and was a world class craftsman who not only could build a house but also build and carve Queen Anne furniture by hand and I took some classes there for fun. It is in a historic district of Boston and you will never, ever regret taking any class there.

How long would it take e to become a master carpenter?

The term "Master Carpenter" means different things in different jurisdictions - and some don't have such a thing. Perhaps you're thinking of "Journeyman Carpenter". This is the normal title after you finish an apprenticeship in carpentry. An apprenticeship normally takes three-four yours and combines work, with day release school or night school. You have to be sponsored for apprenticeship by an employer and log several thousand work hours with him. In some jurisdictions, apprenticeship is co-sponsored by a union.

Good for you for looking into an apprenticeship. Too many students think college/university is the only way to get a satisfying career and they end up with a worthless degree.

When did Jesus become a carpenter?

When does any child who follows into the family business become a worker in that business? He most likely began by cleaning up around the shop, and gradually was introduced to using tools by doing simple tasks and then progressively more complex one until one day he was able to do the most complicated ones. You may be interested that although our modern Bibles list Jesus early trade as a carpenter, this is possibly not quite true. According to Fr. James Martin in his book “Jesus a Pilgrimage,” in the gospel of Mark, the earliest gospel, Jesus trade is listed as a tekton, that is a sort of jack of all trades combining the skills of a carpenter, stonemason, cartwright, and joiner all rolled into one. This means he would have been a highly skilled craftsman whose skills were in demand. This may also explain how, in his teachings, he was able to make comments about other trades than carpentry correctly. Such as talking about the stone that the builders rejected becoming the chief cornerstone etc.
