How Do I Block Websites On Windows 8

Is there a way to block all websites except one or two in Windows?

Another method that you can do is to edit your computer’s operating system file called the “hosts” file. Your hosts file is a plain text file that you can open with any text editor, or by using a hosts editor or app. Host files were used in the early days of computers.Your hosts file is a text file that maps hostnames to IP addresses. Generally, a similar process always occurs when you type in the URL of a site into your browser and then your DNS gateway does the work for you to get you to the correct destination. Host files do about the same thing loaded into your computer memory on boot.In short, your hosts file is a form of DNS. Your computer actually looks for your hosts file before hitting the internet and finding the site you’re searching. And yet they can both coexist. Hosts files have been around a long time and certainly aren’t dead. Here’s a sample host file:Where is my hosts file located? Is there software for Windows that blocks all websites except a whitelist during set time periods?

I believe that K9 Web Protection can give you want you want plus a lot more. This is the filter that I used on my daughters computer for years. I, personally, found the default settings too restrictive but it was easy to go in and set the categories or websites that I thought were appropriate. It also will send emails to the parent with activity reports. I'm not sure you can filter by time periods but parental controls in Windows can restrict access to a system based on time for specific users.

How do I block a website in Windows 7 for all browsers?

There are multiple ways to achieve this.Via hosts file configuration under windows system 32/etc folder. There is a sample line commented out inside the file which shows how to write 127.0.0.1 besides the website you want to block. However, do keep this in mind that it will work only on that machine/pc. The reason why this works is because the particular IP is nothing but a loop back address to your localhost system. Basically every website when u try to access, internally converts the name into numbers of this format xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. So when you write 127.0.0.1 besides your url to be blocked it calls this particular masked website rather than actual one, and since this address is local it redirects to nowhere and makes it look like blocked. Now suppose u want to block a series of websites say having the word “hot” in it. In this scenario, mentioning each of them in hosts file is just ridiculous plus not that efficient. In this case, u employ a slightly advance technique by logging into your wifi router/modem and specifying proxy rulea in it. It might sound complex at first but a little google will get you started quite easily. This change will affect not just one machine but all the machines connected to this network. But u may provide exceptions or in simpler terminology configure parental settings to allow only for a selected few machines. The next way and the most unrecommended way is by either asking your ISP to directly perform the same task from there end, or acting even more dumber and paying third party apps to perform the 1st step in a more intuitive and graphical manner.Google and google. It contains a sea of hacks to perform this same task in even more efficient and complex ways giving, even the brightest of minds a tough time to bypass the security/rules laid out by you

How do you block websites on the computer?

The browser used is not important, you need to block the site from all browsers really :)

How to do it is you need to edit the "hosts" file in your Windows system folders. On Win XP it's in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ (I don't have Win 7 but probably in the same place). You can either browse to it in Win Explorer or do a search, ignore the 'this is a system file/folder' messages.

The file itself is 'Read Only' so you need to right click on it, select properties and uncheck the "read only" tick box first, else it won't save after the edit. You can then open it with notepad (or your prefered text editor) and add 2 lines to the fiile after (underneath) all the #comment text and after the "127.0.0.1 localhost" bit, there's most likely already some stuff in there but if not don't worry.
Add:
127.0.0.1 habbo.com
127.0.0.1 www.habbo.com
and save the file, then do the properties thing and re-check the "read only" tick box again (it needs to be read only to stop other progs (malware) writing to it).

This will stop the PC from accessing that particular web address and give a "web page not found" error message and no access to the site regardless of browser type.

It will work for any website specified after the 127.0.0.1 part if you need to block others, what it does is force the browser to look at "self" (i.e. the computer) instead of the internet, blocking access to the site completely.

It might sound a little complicated if you've not done anything like this before but it does work well, honest, and isn't difficult really.

Hope that helps :)

How do I get rid of Block and Surf on Windows 8? The ads pop up on Chrome and Mozilla. Adblocker doesnt seem to work!

You may installed BHO (Browser Helper Object) or some app that has added the same. Use an antivirus such as Avast or better antivirus, it will remove such annoying tools or BHO. I had same issue, it was resolved with Avast.Note: Avast although as better tools but yet it is not good and par with Windows Defender. It doesn't updates on time or schedule timely scans. Plus it gives ads too. Too remove this issue immediately, install avast!, but don't rely on it. Use other such as ESET or Symantec.
