It's not a bug or a hack, it's the way you have your calendar set. The airline sent an automated calendar invite, it was intended as a convenience to you. And Google sets your calendar to accept and display calendar invites by default, again, this is intended to make things easier. You can change your calendar settings to prevent this if you prefer, just choose to not automatically add invites to the calendar. Click here, choose "Settings".You will still get the emails inviting you to schedule on your calendar, but it will be your choice. And if you don't want to see them, of course you can just click "Spam".

No, changes are only passed to other users when you send them.In the background there are small, specially formatted text files that are sent with invitations and amendments. Outlook doesn't show you these, but without them the changes to the appointment won't be passed to anyone else.
