How Do I Convince My Parents To Let Me Join A Fraternity

How do I convince my parents to let me join a fraternity?

I completely understand where you're coming from...there's a lot of negative social stigma surrounding the Greek community and negative stereotypes of Greeks in movies. (That was one of the reasons why I didn't join a sorority at first.)

I would start by explaining to your parents all the pros of being in a fraternity and why you want to join: Brotherhood, service, academics, networking, etc. You can also show them some statistics. At least at my school, the Greek average GPA is higher than the all campus GPA, and I've seen studies that show how beneficial being Greek is. You could also talk about how it would be good for your future. Being in a sorority gave me a lot of leadership experience that I was able to put on my resume and talk about in job interviews. Definitely check out your school's website for the Greek community. My school's site has special resources for parents with more information and can give them a better idea of what the Greek system is and how it works. You could also refer them to the fraternity's national website.

You probably should address the alcohol issue as well because that is a big part of why Greeks are viewed so poorly. Is the house you're looking to join "dry"? (meaning they don't drink in the actual chapter house). Or you could talk about the fraternity's policy on underage drinking, etc. (That might mean stretching the truth a little bit, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!)

Ultimately, if your parents aren't going to be paying for your fraternity fees, then it really is your decision. But getting their approval is always a good idea, especially if you decide to move into the fraternity house. Generally you can take a few days to decide before accepting the bid to join the fraternity, so that could buy you some time.

Also....
Pledge=pledging a fraternity means you have an intention to join aka you are on your path to being a member. Until you are initiated, you are called a "pledge."
Bid=when a fraternity wants you to join, they will give you a "bid" to join. Whether you accept it or not is up to you.
Rush=the process of choosing which fraternity to join. If you say "I'm rushing" it means you are going through the recruitment process/checking out different houses to see which one you want to join.

Good luck! :)

How to convince parents to let me join a fraternity?

I really want to join a fraternity this fall but my parents are very against it. I recently got in trouble with drinking too (even though i wasn't even the one drunk) so they have been extra strict. I know I can join a fraternity without their consent, but the problem is to rush I would have to move in early so how could I convince them that fraternities aren't all about partying and drinking and that it is not the sole reason I am joining. Thanks!

How do I convince my parents to let me join ROTC?

The question is:"How do I convince my parents to let me join ROTC? For awhile I've been wanting to join ROTC because an ex of mine loved it and my friends are in it. My dad was in ROTC and I want the structure and foundation of it. I don't want to join the military now and might not but I want to do ROTC. How do I get them to say yes?"First of all, if we are talking about college-level ROTC, and not a HS-level JROTC, AND you are of legal age to make your own decisions, joining the ROTC or the military should not be an issue. That being said, if you want to join for the experience and not go on to actually join the military, I don't see why there should be any objection to taking the first two years of the program, which has no obligation to military service.I know someone who took the first two years of the AFROTC program AND the first two years of the Army ROTC program (consecutively, not concurrently) at his university, because (in his words) they were the easiest A-credits he ever got. Funniest part? He later enlisted in the USMC...

How do I convince my parents to let me join the army?

This question is only answerable in context. Which country’s army? How old are you? What are your goals? What is your life plan to achieve those goals? Where are you currently in life? …in education? …in reaching your goals? What are your parent’s objections? How do you feel about those objections? What reservations do you have? There’s about a hundred more questions that go with these, but this is a start.

My parents were ok with my joining a fraternity, till they saw the SAE video. What do I do to reassure them that not all frats are like that?

You would be better off joining a professional organization instead of a frat. Frats are basically just upper-class versions of street gangs. A professional organization will provide you better networking and career mentoring than a frat, and you probably won't end up dead or arrested. There are also various student activity groups available on almost all campuses that you could join if you're looking for fun activities. Quiditch leagues were all the rage a few years back from what I hear.

How can I convince my parents to let me join the Military?

Tell them that you realize that you still need to mature a bit, and that the military will help you mature into a responsible adult that knows how to get things done. Also, everybody should server at least a term and see a bit of the world before they think about getting a normal job or doing another 4 years of school.

My parents won't let me join a sorority!?

Honestly I would not rush or pleadge a sorority until you have at least one semester under your belt. That way you will have a feel for college life and be adjusted. In the fall go to the club fair and maybe find a club you'd like to join that is a great way to make friends.

Rushing too early i find out that both girls and guys join houses they really don't fit in at.

Since you are already not paid and signed up you might want to call up your older brother and she how your parents acted when he joined a fraternity. If you find out they acted the same way with him then join and go from there. Now if they acted differently with your brother ask your parents why the double standard.

Honestly people in greek life generally have a higher GPA as the school holds those in greek life to a higher standard. Being in sorority is a great way to get life long friends but not the only way. The one thing that I got out of being in a fraternity was living with my friends and classmates. So if i needed help with homework I could easily stop by their room for help or just discuss the assignment. It really help boost my studies where I could seek out help from my friends I was in the same class with.

Best thing you can do if you want to join the sorority is do it, and do your best to do well academically and prove them you can handle being in a sorority and get good grades
