Before, you might want to try restoring, I would suggest you to login to your gmail account on a PC and go to the "Contacts" Menu as shown in the figure below.You should find all your contacts in this window.Now go to your phone, follow the steps:1. Go to settings.2. Go to Accounts.3. Select Google.4. You should be able to see all your google accounts here. 5. Make sure you have the same account that holds your contacts is configured here. (Otherwise add it using "Add Account" option)6. Now you can synch all or any of your desired applications as below.7. Make sure you have the Contacts Sync button on as seen in the above pic.8. Obviously you want to restore FULL usability of WhatsApp AFTER you made a factory reset of your Android phone.There are two important steps to accomplish before the factory reset:a) Enable Google cloud backup of your contacts. This is done at the Android Settings (icon), then select ACCOUNT, then tap on GOOGLE and then switch to ON the toggle on the Contacts app. This will backup ALL your contacts in the phone to Google’s cloud.b) Set your WhatsApp to BACKUP all it’s data which compromises messages and media sent through WhatsApp. You do that at the WhatsApp configuration menu (three little vertical dots or 3 horizontal lines on top of each other) on the top right of your screen. Then tap on SETTINGS, then CHATS, then on CHAT BACKUP. Configure your Google account in there so WhatsApp backs up everything into Google Drive (Google’s cloud as well).
