How Do I Explain To My Parents That I Want To Change My Name

How do I tell my parents I want to change my name?

(I’m 15, so obviously I can’t just change it.)

I hate my name, and I want to change it, at least socially, but my parents have told me they spent a long time picking it out, and I know it will hurt their feelings. So what I’m asking is how to tell them that I want a different name, and preferably softening the blow as much as possible.

How to explain name change to family?

I am a guy, 22 yrs old. I am getting my name changed to the last name of my mom and stepdad because I want my name to be the same as theirs. My stepdad is a DAD to me since he has helped raise me since I was 9. My only question is how to go about explaining it to the rest of my family? I mean, my sister is married so she doesn't care. My biological father and I have not had any contact in years and I really don't care if we have a relationship or not. I was wondering though how to explain it to my mom's side of the family come the holidays and stuff like that. I like this also because when I get married and start a family, my wife and kids will have the name as well.

How to tell my parents I'm changing my name?

I've always hated my name and whenever someone asks for my name I get really embarrassed when I have to tell them. My parents don't really care what I do, they just let me do whatever I want but I know that if I say I want to change my name they will freak!
In the UK you can legally change your name at 16 and I'm almost 18 so I can legally do it without my parents permission, but I don't want to go ahead and do it without them knowing.

What do your parents think about changing your name?

I tried to change my name twice. The first time, I tried going by Eli. Mom made it very clear that she disapproved of this name and made sure to pronounce it EEEEEli at every opportunity. Frustrated, I went back to Sabrina for a few months. In that time I was debating, poring over lists of unisex names that wouldn't immediately be assumed male or female. When I settled on Addison Taylor, I went to my parents.“We spent a long time picking out your name, you know,” my dad said, disappointment creasing his features.“I know, Dad, and I respect and appreciate that, but Sabrina doesn't fit me at all,” I said. “I won't be able to transition if my name gives me away every time.”“Do you have something else in mind, then?” Mom said.“Addison Taylor Rich,” I said proudly.“And do you know what you need to do to get your name changed?” Mom asked, obviously expecting the answer to be no.After subjecting her to a long description of the paperwork involved, Mom sighed.“You really are serious about this,” she said. “We’ll go to the courthouse in the morning.”

How to explain name change to employers?

Sometimes employers ask if you have gone by any other name. A couple of years ago in my early twenties I had my name legally changed, I don't hate my parents or anything weird like that. I just never liked it. Anyway I filed for a name change and the judge saw that I had good cause to change it. So he changed it for me.

I had all my legal documents updated and everything to the new name. I even got accepted to a state university, on my application they asked if I had gone by any other name and I wrote down my old name, and I got accepted into college.

But how do I tell employers this? I had a bad experience, where I went to an interview and the manager gave me a hard time for having changed my name, but I had other positive interviews where the managers did not care.

They just cared that I was qualified for the position, honest and that I had a good record.

How do I convince my parents to let me change my name?

Ever since I was 12, I've been begging my parents to let me change my name. Coming from an Israeli family, I was named Hagar- and that was fine when we lived in Israel. Our life now, however, is in Australia ( which we moved to when I was nine years old ). I try to explain how much it bothers me that no one can understand my name pronouncistion or that I always make up names at takeaway shops to avoid wasting time. I know these seem like little things but I feel like it's just not fair.

In addition to this, I absolutely despise the origin of my name. The Torah. Yes, I'm Jewish but not only do I lack a connection with my religion, but Hagar in the Torah was a slave who was eventually kicked out and died alone in the desert.

They refuse to accept any of this as reason, and act offended when I tell them I'm not happy with it. I'm almost 18, but this isn't something I want to do without their blessing , it wouldn't feel right. I've suggested a range of names - including ones with a Jewish origin that are common in Israel. My favourite is Abigail, which not only means " A fathers joy " ( which I think is very sweet, especially since I'm so close to my dad ) but it also combines my parents names into one, therefore still honouring them.

Does anyone have any tips on how I can get them to listen to reason? I'm really struggling with my name

How can I convince my parents to change my name legally?

Tell your mom that it's YOUR life and you should have the identity you want. Tell your mom exactly what you said in this question. Also tell her that you understand why she gave you that name and you've weighed the pros and cons of changing it, and that the pros drastically outweigh the cons. Also add that you WILL eventually change your name, even if it's when you're an adult. And tell her that it's less of a hassle to get the name change done now when you're under 18, because when you're over 18 you have to do a ton more paperwork to change your name than when you're a minor, and that you don't want to have to change the name on your driver's license, educational degrees, any published works, etc (since these are things you'd have to do when changing your name later in life.)

Can I legally change my name without my parents knowing at all?

Probably not because you have to be 18 to change you name without your parent’s permission; I imagine that would coincide with April when you are set to join the Marines instead of go off to college like your parents planned.

If you are that serious about not wanting your parents to be involved in anything in your life why not file for emancipation instead? Oh, I forgot you don’t want your parents to know.

Does changing your name and cutting your parents out of your life without a word sound like the actions of a Marine or even a reasonable adult? What have they done to you that is so bad they do not deserve an explanation for you actions? You probably will not believe this now but the day will come when you will miss them and wish they were by your side.

My parents are both deceased and while we had our ups and downs I would give anything for just one more day with them. Do the right thing for you and your parents; someday you will be glad that you did.
