How Do I Get In To Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa?

Phi Theta Kappa is the national honor society for two year colleges. You must have a GPA of at least 3.5 to join but must only maintain a 3.0 to stay a member. PTK looks good on your transcript and because of this, many universities will use it in deciding admission should you choose to transfer. PTK also has transfer scholarships available to members only. The cost of membership is only to cover administration fees. It is not an annual fee. You pay this one time only. If you choose not to join at this time, you will still be eligible to join at a later date as long as your GPA is 3.5 or above when you join. My advice is to join now so that you may be able to take advantage of scholarships that may be available now, for your current college, as well as transfer scholarships. Go to the website www.ptk.org for more information.

If I am in Phi Theta Kappa, can I attend Stanford?

The chairperson did not do a great example: Stanford is VERY tough on transfer students. For Fall 2012 there were only 33 transfer students accepted to the university = 2.2% of the transfer students that applied.

But that does not rule out a top school and probably a better school for your situation. Based on your previous questions, it looks like you are in Calif. Almost all the California community colleges have direct transfer programs to the UCs or CSUs. And if you have to support your daughter while going to school, I think are more family oriented schools that will help you balance the parenting and the school. For example UC Davis or UCSB are great options... I know you are saying UCSB is a BIG party school!! There are different things for different students but they have fantastic family housing apartments and campus sponsored day care. Or the Cal Polys are another great options. I don't know which CSUs would be good... CSULB has a great child development center but I don't think they have family housing, I believe CSU Fullerton has both.

What I suggest doing is formulate your question - as to what schools would be a good fit for you and has the other things you may need. And how to get the scholarships. Then reask the question in the Travel - Los Angeles section and ask Maliboo to answer.
- she has some tie with California colleges and universities. Most of her answers are pretty good.

Good luck!

Is Phi Theta Kappa a scam?

Last year I received the invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa in my college, and I accepted the invitation because people there were telling me that is such a privilege to be part of it, and that they help you get scholarships, etc. I got inducted in October of last year, but I have not done anything with it because I have not had time (I go to college full time, work, etc). I want to start doing volunteer work at the hospital, beginning this summer, because I will drop some credits and have more time. I was on FB and was part of my PTK chapter group, but i got tired of seeing their stupid posts on the group, then I left the group. These people were so rude, particularly the secretary, who is a student too. The activities they plan for are stupid, and have nothing to do with volunteer work. They announced this movie they were going to watch, but in someone's church. I simply asked the question "why isn't the movie going to be shown in our college?" MAN! That woman lashed out on me... she wrote 2 long paragraphs telling me that it's going to be at this church because it's the only place they have now, and I should be going to all the meetings and suggesting things too, etc. omg, she went on and on. So I left the group. Today I also just cancelled my FB account, got tired of it. I can stay in touch with closest family and friends through email. So I wrote the chapter advisor, who is also my Math professor, asking if she could bring to class the new summer schedule of PTK activities. All she wrote me was: it's on FB page. Wow, talking about being rude. I told her I closed my FB account, and asker her if that was the only way to have access to this information. Don't you think this is ridiculous? I paid 80 dollars last year to join this thing and now that Im gonna have more time to volunteer and participate they're pawning me off and acting rude. No matter what, when I graduate in December, I will still wear my PTK regalia. So do you think this is a scam? I am disappointed.

What is the Phi Beta Kappa?

Phi Beta Kappa is a pretty prestigious honor society in the US, with members like Michelle Obama, Frank Oppenheimer, Condoleezza Rice, etc. Members are traditionally selected in participating undergraduate colleges or universities by faculty that are members. From wikipedia:“The Phi Beta Kappa Society (ΦΒΚ) is the oldest honor society for the liberal arts and sciences in the United States, with 284 active chapters. Widely considered to be the nation's most prestigious honor society,[1] Phi Beta Kappa aims to promote and advocate excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and to induct the most outstanding students of arts and sciences at American colleges and universities.[1] Founded at The College of William and Mary on December 5, 1776, as the first collegiate Greek-letter fraternity, it was among the earliest collegiate fraternal societies and remains the oldest existing American academic honor society.[2] Phi Beta Kappa (ΦΒΚ) stands for Φιλοσοφία Βίου Κυβερνήτης or in Latin letters Philosophia Biou Cybernētēs, which means "Love of learning is the guide of life".”

Should I join Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society?

It may not be as simple as you choosing to join PΘK. You’ll have to meet a few prerequisites:Need to be going to an accredited two-year school, where there’s an active chapter, and enrolled in an associate’s degree program.Need about one full semester of credit hoursNeed a 3.5 Grade Point AverageNeed to be invited to join the group (i.e. “don’t call us, we’ll call you”)Need to live up to local and national standards of good moral behavior.(Disclaimer: I’m familiar with PΘK, but am not a member, being unqualified on items 1, 4, and most probably 5.)

Is Phi Theta Kappa membership worth it?

Definitely join.As a member, and chapter president, I've seen so many scholarships that given because of this organization and the great recognition that comes with it. Side-note; these aren't just $500 scholarships, my friend was just awarded a full ride to one to SMU ($60k/yr) and another is paying about $100/semester to go to UT Austin. You get what you put in it. HOWEVER, don't expect the membership to be your golden ticket by itself. Go to regionals, internationals, become an officer, work on Honors In Action, etc. At worst, most state schools will offer $1000-$2000 for scholarships, at best, it can pay for everything. Hope this helps!

How does one join Phi Beta Kappa?

On Phi Beta Kappa's website they state, "You must be elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa by the chapter where you received your bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. degree." [1]The election process differs by each school.  In order to determine how the process works at your university talk with a faculty member who holds membership in PBK or someone who is chair of the department of your degree.Approximately 10 percent of graduates are elected to membership.  Therefore, if you are not close to being in the top 10 percent (GPA) of your major, the chances of you being admitted are slim.  Some chapters look at other criteria such as "breadth and depth of courses apart from the major." What is Phi Beta Kappa and what can be said of recipients?

Selection at my (liberal arts) college was pretty structured. People with a 4.0 GPA received automatic selection. They then had professors filter through students with next best GPAs and selected students who showed outstanding qualities or achievements--community service based, academically, etc. PBK is the oldest and most prestigious honor society in the US and is pretty selective. Many presidents and other important US figures are Phi Beta Kappa.

Joining Phi Theta Kappa really worth?

I got an invitation from Phi Theta Kappa, and I know it looks good on transfer application and resume as well as there is an oppotunity to get a scholarship.
But since I'm an international student, few schools actually provide scholarship to F-1 visa student because there's usually no money to give to visitors from overseas, besides top private schools...so I'm wondering even though I get involved in Phi Theta Kappa, I wouldn't have eligibility for receiving scholarship?
And also, if your GPA is already high, you pretty much can get into any uni you want to even if you didn't join this honor society?

I'd like to hear pros and cons about Phi Theta Kappa!
