It's definitely a beta release: there have been hangs, snags, crashes, and functional impairments aplenty, affecting both the OS as such and key apps like Safari, Mail, Messages, and so on.While you can definitely run it without encountering any issues for a spell, sooner or later a freshly-styled dialog box will let you know that playing video in Safari has become a much more tenuous operation, etc. It's very much a beta, and it has bugs and rough edges aplenty.

Why would the OS X Yosemite Public Beta 1 not download?

This could possibly be because of two reasons, a)Busy server / b)Problem with Redemptiom Code .Try resuming your download , it should get downlaoded without any problem 'cuz i can see you already entered the code, it may have happened as the Apple's server was causing problem due to over traffic.If still the problem exists , the reason may be due to the Redemption Code which Apple provided. Go to Apple's official Public Beta website and sign in to your account and click on Leave the Beta programme. After that try signing up again using your Apple account. Then Apple will provide you another Code. Try downlaoding the Beta version using the newly generated Code .  Now get OSX Yosemite Public Beta

I haven't tried, so don't take my answer for good.In general you need the latest beta on the desktop products to connect to the beta versions of the devices.  For example, if we plan to debug a website on iOS8 Beta2 Safari browser, your Mavericks safari will not be able to connect with your device, you will need to install your latest build of webkit (Aka safari).But in this case, you are upgrading your desktop, and it should work with previous devices, even appleTV1, and for that reason you should not have problems.But do not forget that you are installing a BETA version, and beta versions may have bugs, and one of those bugs may affect what you want to do.Good luck

Is OS X Yosemite beta stable enough to run on my primary computer?

Using it for a few days now in Macbook air 13"Grey screen of death has been changed to Black screen of death.Consumes more battery.Keynote, Pages, Numbers won't work. Microsoft office works.Most of Adobe softwares are working.Sometimes chrome crashes, chromium never crashed.Lots of Anti Aliasing issues.There are some flickering issues in the file selection window.
