How Do I Know If I Tore My Stitches

How do you know if your cat has torn her stitches, or if she's healing ok?

Little bumps aren't so much of a problem, depending on your definition of little. There is always going to be a little swelling around the suture site, so I wouldn't worry too much about bumps that are less than 4-5mm across unless they are really red. If you see redness, pus-like (oops, my original word was bleeped out. Haha I meant pus-y, but it came out as something else) discharge, or larger bumps, the suture site might be infected. They usually have a couple layers of sutures, so even if one or two of the first ones rip, it shouldn't cause a leak from the body cavity. If you see an area that looks open, you may want to go to the vet to get it checked out. I know it's hard to get cats not to act cat-like. The fact that they are carrying on in such a manner is a good sign. If they completely tore out all of their sutures, their intestines would probably work their way out pretty quickly (BAD), but most vets do a good job with sutures and it's highly unlikely that all of them would rip. Good luck, and good on ya for getting them spayed!

How do I know if I have infected stitches?

will if you see green pus or any fluid coming of it or you have fever without clear cause that mean you have infected stitches, however, plsome pain and itching will be part of the normal healing process so if you are in doubt contact a GP to look at it !

How do you know when you should have stitches removed?

As to when stitches are to be removed depends on the part of the body where they are applied, the nature of suture material, presence or absence of wound infection, any comorbid condition which hampers wound healing and the surgeons decision. Considering all is well,Face including lips, eyelid, nose - 3- 5 daysScalp : 6–8 daysChest and abdomen, extremities : 8–10 daysEar :10–14 daysBack, hand, foot- 12–14 days.Same applies for staplers.

How do you know when you need to go in for stitches or can just bandaid something?

That is not an easy question to answer a lot of times it is a judgement call however a few guidelines; If  you can't control the bleeding then you need helpIf the wound is gapping open you need to pull it closedIf the laceration is over a joint it will pull open every time you move the jointIf you want the best cosmetic results you need sutureIt subcutaneous fat is poking outGenerally if you have to ask you probably need sutures Having said that we are using skin adhesive more often these days. Skin adhesive (Dermabond) is not much different from sterile Super Glue that is dyed purple. It works great. It has its limitations though. If the are is under tension or highly movable it will fail. If it gets very  wet it will fail. Recently I was on vacation and while in a "fun house" in the dark walked into a post and cut my forehead above my eyebrow. No way did I want to go to the Emergency Department and sit for several hours (and have everyone else's day ruined). So on the way home I bought $1 tube of superglue and fixed it myself. It healed great, no scar. I will caution you though if you have ever dealt with superglue. It can be a little tricky. You often can glue yourself to the tube, the sheets or bandages (anything nearby). I once had a child with a cut around his eye and accidentally glued his eyelid shut. As you might imagine the parents were none too pleased.

How do u know if you ripped your stitches after you gave birth?

It'll just look funny my stitches came out after four days so I dont think you have anything to worry about but see your health visitor if your not sure

Episiotomy stitches tore?

I put on both of my birth plans that I did not want an episiotomy unless it was medically necessary, and that I wanted to be consulted beforehand. Unfortunately, my son was a forceps delivery, and episiotomy is necessary to make room for them. It didn't hurt at all, I had an epidural. Stitches didn't hurt while I was getting them (epidural was still there). Afterwards, stitches made walking up or down stairs VERY uncomfortable, sitting was bad too. (used a pillow) I hate needles, but since I couldn't see, and I had my baby to ooh and ahh over, I didn't really even think about the stitches. As for the IV, I chose to have it both to keep me hydrated and because it's a quick way for them to give meds if necessary. I just didn't look when they put it in, and the needle doesn't stay in your arm, just a little tube. Now, all of that being said, when I had my daughter I still had the IV, and the epidural, but no episiotomy. I tore a TEENY bit (1 stitch) and healing up after that was NOTHING. At least compared to the 85+ stitches I had with my son. Just tell the doctor that anything they do, unless it's an emergency situation, you want discussed with you prior to the procedure. Doctors shouldn't have a problem with that at all.

Perineum tear: how to know if my stitches have ripped?

OK for the tearing...I tore all 4 ways with my first daughter. I had a total of 16 stitches(don't remember how many each way) but I tore like a t on each side and on top and bottom.Didn't really bother me til the epidural wore off and oh lord it was soooo uncomfortable. I had to do the sitz baths I dunno how many times a day just to sorta take the edge off. If you are allowed(if not breastfeeding) try using some Ibuprofen or Advil (extra strength) and continue to use a cold pack in ur undies when able to(like at home) those really help.It took about a month give or take a week for them to dissolve, and the pain went away about 3-4 days after the stitches were gone. Yeah pressure is normal to a certain extent, its still swollen which means that the pressure will be there until it fully subsides. As for the epidural discomfort is normal but I would have it checked out by your OB because with my 3rd daughter I twitched when the doc hit a nerve and she ended up poking a hole in my spine with the needle which lead to spinal fluid leaking into my back which not only made it almost unbearable to deal with, but gave me the worst case of migraine type headaches I've ever had(they call em Spinal headaches). So if you are starting or have had bad headaches when your backaches then same thing might have happened to you. There is no way to tell it happened unless you get these symptoms and they check it out so the minute you feel a headache comin on with backache get checked out asap because they can get bad. It was about 8 months after I had my daughter that they backaches and headaches finally went away(which they really haven't but they are tolerable now unlike before) Best of Luck

How will I know if I ripped internal stitches after a C-section?

When they sew your uterus it will not open again unless, you try to have sex now and you need to wait at least 40 days even 60 days. Your uterus may open if you become pregnant again and you try to have normal delivery it may open from the same place as your uterus and thus you should let your doctor know this before hand as your life and your baby's life depends on your future doctor knowing this. Normally those stitches are safe that burning feeling or great pain comes from your outer stitches. That pain is an indication that you over strained yourself. You need to slow down or it can come open. Your stitches in your uterus are made of dissolving thread. For your outer scar in your c section, depending on your doctor and the city where you had your c-section in the old days they used stitches, then they started to use staples, and now just glue with strong tape over it to keep the skin from coming open. All of these come open when you do not let your body heal and you see it. It just tears open one or 2 same time, and then you have a hole inside that you have till you grow skin that covers the hole. Of course you treat the open wound so you do not get an infection but where it opens up and the skin grows then you have a bad scar area. Compared to women that take care of themselves and you can barely notice a thin line. Every women heals differently. You need to exercise to make your body fix itself but you need to do it moderately when you feel just a tiny bit of pain you need to lay down and rest.

How do i know if i ripped my stitches on my medial meniscus!?

I had surgery April 5 on a Medial Meniscus tear and a loosened ACL! I tore my meniscus horizontally so it had to be repaired and stitched up!! They told me not to run or I could rip the stitches! They also have me in an ACL brace where I can't bend past 90* or the stitches will rip. Also I'm out of sports for 6 months...
Tonight I was running around (with my brace on) chasing a dog, after I was done my knee started hurting.
So I was wondering if you can tell if you ripped the stitches, if so how will I know and what will I feel??

Thanks
Jordynn!

How do you know whether your stitches will dissolve or not?

Most stitches you can see have to be removed. The ones placed internally typically dissolve. But there are exceptions. Probably the easiest way to tell is if the doctor who put them in gave you instructions to return in 7-10 days for suture removal than they aren't likely to dissolve. \U0001f609
