Why is -OH a bad leaving group?
First, the carbon-oxygen C-O bond in C-OH is relatively strong (~350kJ/mol) and difficult to break. The resulting products would be an organic cation R+ and a hydroxide ion OH-. If you were attempting to substitute the -OH with another nucleophile, (ie. bromide ion Br-), the use of NaBr would not produce a substituted product since the C-O bond would be stronger than the C-Br bond. In other words, hydroxide OH- is a stronger nucleophile than Br- and therefore a poorer leaving group. To convert the -OH into a better leaving group, it is common to use a strong acid such as HCl or HBr. The acid will protonate the OH group forming C-OH2+ (a protonated OH group). The protonation greatly weakens the C-O bond and the bond easily breaks forming an organic cation R+ and a neutral water molecule. Any nucleophile stronger than water (ie. Br-) can now react with the organic cation forming a substituted product.

You will come up against the same thing in real life; having to work with people you do not like on projects you do not like. I think it would be better for your grade if you stick with the same group. I did that once in school; asked to switch groups. The teacher graded me harder because she felt I wasn't trying to work with other people. She acted supportive to my face but gave me a lower grade than others in my group. It is best to not stir the pot, if you can help it. The first group I was in was failing, even she admitted it. They were lazy and did not work on the project until the last minute. I complained to the professor about it and like I said, she acted supportive and concerned for my grade. But at the end of the project the others in my group got a B and I was given a C. So think about it before you change groups. It sucks that so many classes now require group projects. I am an A student in any class that does not require a group project and a B student in classes that do. My grade is brought down because of the lack of other students abilities. I understand we have to work in groups at work but school should be different. Good luck to you.
