How Do I Make A Wild Squirrel My Pet

How can I get a wild squirrel to come and let me pet it instead of it running away? How can I make it less afraid of me?

I used to work on a campus that had lots of squirrels that students and other people fed. The squirrels had become unafraid of humans and who come over to you when you were eating lunch. Swatting them didn't work. They are incredibly tough, muscular little creatures. The worst thing that ever happened to me while protecting my lunch was that one put its front paws on one of my fingers. Their claws are as sharp as razor blades, and without any intent to do harm, the squirrel punctured my finger with each of its claws on one foot. There is a shrine in Japan where they have tame deer. They are thoroughly obnoxious because a whole herd of them will come up to you and start poking and trying to nibble. To get them to move away you would really have to hurt them, and probably would have incided hostile reactions from humans.

Is it illegal to have a pet squirrel?

It is illegal to keep a wild squirrel as a pet. In order to keep a wild squirrel, you need to have a special permit, like the ones held by licensed wildlife rehabilitators. Even then, you can not have it as a pet - you must properly prepare it and release it into the wild when it is healthy enough.

In some states, you may keep domestically bred squirrels, chipmunks, flying squirrels and other small animals as pets. You need to check with your state's DNR or your local office of the US Department of Fish and Wildlife to see what the laws are in your state.

If it is legal in your state, then you need to check in your municipality, as some towns have local ordinances against specific pets.

If you find that it is legal to have a domesticly bred squirrel as a pet, make sure that the one you get IS a domestically bred animal. If you are found with a wild squirrel, it will be confiscated. If a wild squirrel in your possession bites anyone, the squirrel would most likely be destroyed by the health department to test it for rabies.

If you have a wild squirrel in your possession, please surrender it to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator at once. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact....

How do you catch a squirrel for a pet?

An adult squirrel will not make a good pet. While ne may like visiting, the squirrels evolved to live as they do outdoors.Baby Squirrels act adorable, and look cute, like most baby animals. But they grow up, and need to find a mate. They will get aggressive and hard to manage when they reach that age. This is a very common pattern with people who’ve tried to raise a baby squirrel. It takes a great deal of work, and they eventually lose them to the wild.A friend of mine took care of a baby squirrel she found on the ground. She couldn’t find the nest or the mother. While he was friendly to me, and crawled on my arm, it seemed very clear to me he was not tame, nor did he have any special attraction to humans. My friend was just his surrogate mother.Eventually, she also ran into the squirrels need to be outside permanently, so she let him out for good. He found a home, had a mate, and brought his mate to come visit her a couple of times, although the female squirrel would not come near her.He still visited her every few months, but eventually he stopped coming. Squirrels only live 5–10 years in the wild.Second Chance Wildlife Center has a great document(pdf) detailing the difficulties with squirrels as pets. Although this page on mom.me has a more optimistic outlook.

How do I pet a squirrel?

Yes, I suppose. If they are orphaned and hand raised. But they aren't meant to be pets. They will still be wild animals and will behave like it.Since they are rodents, their incisors don't stop growing and they need to constantly chew. It is common for a squirrel to cause widespread power outages or cause house fires by chewing wires. Expect them to do this as a pet, too. Actually, expect them to chew on anything and everything. They will still go through their patterns of behavior as if outside. Nesting behaviors, mating behaviors (which may make them territorial and aggressive), collecting “acorns and nuts" to hide for the coming winter - and being destructive. And they will climb on anything and everything as high as they can. If that happens to be an expensived piece of furniture, then that will become a place they like..and it will be covered is bite and claw marks. Huge climbing structures will have to be built and that won't keep them off furniture. If found orphaned, as is the case this time if year, the best thing would be to leave it alone fir a couple of days to see if mom cones for him. Usually they are nearby waiting for people to stop handling their kidIf you feel it's in danger and you take it, you are looking at 4–6 feedings a day (24/7), stimulate them them to defecate And it takes months, not weeks of this care.My opinion is that though they can be pets, doesn't mean they should be pets. It's best to leave this to an experienced wildlife rehabilitation organization

How to keep a pet squirrel occupied?

Hi Erin... here's a website that you will find helpful for squirrels: http://www.mary.cc/squirrels/unreleasabl...

Here's an excerpt from this website for toys:

Toys: Squirrels like to play with toys. A small stuffed toy their size or smaller with do. Remember to take the eyes, nose...off so they don't chew and swallow them. Don't get the ones with beans inside, just natural stuffing. They make these especially for dogs, cats and ferrets so they're safer. Squirrels love to wrestle with their stuffed squirrel, throw him around, chew on his arms, do somersaults...The ones at right are ferret toys from Petco but I saw some fleece and sheepskin ones for dogs that looked very similar. They like those hanging parrot toys with wood and rawhide. They also like the natural wood bird perches that attach to the side of the cage or you can get some tree branches and wire them to the cage vertically and horizontally so they can climb and sit on them. I also just take a piece of fireplace wood, drill a hole through it and wire it to the cage.

My dog can get sick from squirrel?

I do not believe that your dog is going to suffer any ill effects from the squirrel. That squirrel must of been a slow one. Dogs kill things alot, wild dogs would of eaten it, and so do wolves. Just watch your dog and make sure she is not acting funny. I do think you might want to train your dog to be a squirrel hunting dog. She would have so much fun, and it seems like she is fast to even catch one. Good luck, and if you are really worried just call your vet and ask and I think you would feel better.............but I just think she will be alright.

Would you pet a squirrel? Is it ever safe to do so?

No. The girl who used to live next to me tried that. The squirrel bit her and she had to have rabbies shots. Squirrels tend to bite when they feel treatened. And since squirrels can carry rabbies, you have to have shots after you're bitten, which apparently are quite painful and make you sick for several days.

Is it wrong to feed wild squirrels donuts?

technically it is not good for them but as long as they are not eating a steady diet of donuts then they should be fine. everyone needs a little treat every once in a while. i give my squirrel some peanut butter or a french fry sometimes.

and note to the person about there teeth, there teeth will be fine they grow constanly through out there life and file off the end so it is never the same teeth. and a little sugar once is not going to hurt them. just don't make a habbit of it. your fine
