How Do I Make My Dog Less Fearful

Dog is scared of the rain?

My dog is literally terrified of the rain. As far as I remember he wasn't scared of it, or if he was NOWHERE NEAR how scared he is now. He usually smells the rain coming about 10-15 minutes before it starts too and starts acting nervous already. Once it officially starts raining, he will not stay still, He trembles, will not eat or drink, tries to tear up plastic bags, clothes, the furniture, newspaper etc. His toungue extends more than usual, he salivates, and breathes thru his mouth non-stop(As if he was tired, similar to after I walk him).

It's raining here in NY, and I need to wake up in...6 hours. He drives me crazy. I can't lock him up outside the house (Apartment), or outside the rooms (He will tear up the living room, he's done it before. I've tried trying to hold him but he doesnt stay still, and is near impossible to sleep like that.

The options I think I might do is tie him up with his leash. Tie him up to idk...possibly the front door. That way the few feet of mobility he does have wouldn't allow him to destroy anything. Or I can put him in his cage. He's only been in the cage twice. On 2 flights, leaving the country and coming back. The cage is similar to the image below, but with no holes on the side. it has gratings on the front and back. I just feel bad sticking him there.

Reason behind his fear? He was traumatized when he left the country. The house we lived at over there have roof's that make a LOT of noise when it rains. A light rain would make a ton of noise, nevertheless when we had a thunderstorm. One day We had left him alone in the morning, and it rained. Not only did we forget to leave the lights on, but the house flooded the same day. So when I get home that day, he'n in the dark surrounded by water, shaking. That was the first time he tore up the house. Ever since then when it rains, he goes bonkers.

It's been going on for 3-4 years now. Any suggestions

How can I get my pug to be less scared?

When I got a Pug I heard that they were fun and adventurous dogs but mine sure isnt. She is a little over one year and is scared of everything. She is scared of people and barks at them consitently, she is scared of riding in the car and jumps into my lap during the ride which is dangerous, she is scared of baths, she is terrified of me clipping her nails to the point that I cant do it at all, also she is so jumpy that if you move something that she doesnt see me move and it makes noise she jumps 10 feet. She is so jumpy and scared with everything. What should I do?

How do I get my fearful dog to trust me?

First, you must be very patient, low key, quiet and gentle. She needs to learn over time that you are trustworthy, and that you will not do anything to hurt or frighten her. She may have had a bad experience with people in the past, or she may be a dog who is just lacking in confidence generally. She is in a new environment. Maybe in the past she hot courage from being with the other sled dogs, so she is not used to coping by herself.Usually we use treats to build a dog’s confidence, and make an association - "good things happen when (you) are around”. However, sled dogs are used to spending a lot of energy, and not eating much when they are not working. Sometimes a huskey will choose not to eat for days at a time. They can have a very smal appetite. Added to that, most dogs lose their appetite if they are stressed. These are two reasons she is not interested in treats.Sit down on the floor on one side of the room. How close does she come if you ignore her? Does she stay as far away as possible, or will she be comfortable being halfway across the room? Get an idea of the size of her comfort zone. Don’t approach her, don’t try to call her or attract her to you at all. Don’t even look at her. Just praise her quietly if the takes even a small step towards you.You can try to speed things up with treats. First you must be prepared not to feed her a meal. Then get some high value food, such as raw meat, and throw a piece across the room, as far away from you as possible. Just let her eat the meat if she wants to. Don’t try to entice her to come closer. Just let her take the food when she is at a distance from you. Repeat this a few times. If she doesn’t eat the food, pick it up and leave the room. Try again later. But don’t give her a “"free meal”. She will take the meat that you throw when she is hungry and less stressed. Gradually, if she eats the small pieces of meat, you can toss the next piece when she come a step closer. Are you in a cold climate? Weather permitting, open the back door, and try to position yourself so that she is in between you and the door. Slowly walk towards her. If she goes out the door, good. If not, for the time being you will have to pick her up to take her outside.

How do I make my Italian Greyhound less scared?

I agree with the previous person's opinions.
Try talking to him in a gentle tone, there might not be any way of knowing what he has been through..he might have been abused for all you know...you might just happen to look like someone he doesnt like.
Does he just not go to people of your gender?or just you?
I know a dog who hates men!
Please dont rush him, I am sure with time, he will improve.

Why do dogs get scared more easily than humans?

Dogs are not inherently more fearful than humans. It depends on what they learn is “normal” while they are young, compared to what they are exposed to as they get older. All animals go through a socialization period when they are young, when they learn to be comfortable with normal, everyday things. A dog’s socialization period ends at about 14 weeks of age, after which they are more likely to be afraid of new and unusual objects or sounds. If we see rampant fearfulness in dogs, it is likely because they don't get enough positive exposure early in life to the things they interact with regularly later in life.Humans may also have an easier time adjusting to new things because we are able to use logic and language to explain to each other when something is safe. A child is just as likely to be afraid of fireworks as a dog, but you can explain to an older child that fireworks aren't really all that scary. A dog can't understand this kind of explanation. Also, it's worth noting that some breeds of dog are prone to be more fearful of certain things than other breeds. For instance, labs are generally bred for friendliness, and chows are generally not, so a chow would likely be more suspicious or fearful of new people than a lab would be. So any person who is looking to get a new puppy but is uncertain of their ability to socialize it, should look for a breed of dog that is naturally less fearful.

My dog is such a coward. How can I make him brave?

Dogs are non-confrontational by nature. if given a choice of fight or flight, dogs choose flight response. Your dog is not a coward, he just doesn’t feel the need to be aggressive. People who have aggressive dogs wish to have such docile dogs. I have seen people who have dogs who go crazy barking when the bell rings. Such people just want their dog to shut up so that they can talk to the postman/courier guy/watchman etc. Not all dogs are enemies of cats, some are friends and some are just indifferent.Your dogs sees you as an alpha, according to him you should be protecting him rather than him protecting you. In cases where the dog is alpha, the dog does not listen to the owner, why would he? Which leader will listen to his subordinates? Trust me you don’t want your dog to be an alpha. What you can do is train your dog to bark when he hears the door bell. Let the bell be the trigger to start the behavior of barking. As soon as the bell rings, get him all excited and run to the door and let thim follow you, let him be curious to see who has come. Just the sight of a dog is enough to make people stop in their tracks. Even if your dog does not bark, the mere fact that he is right next to you will make strangers back off.

How can I make my dog to fight for self defence? It afraids of even little puppies. Labra mix, 28 months.

Stop thinking that your Lab is scared of puppies. Most adult dogs avoid puppies does not mean they are scared of them. They may not like puppies as puppies tend to have sharper teeth (milk teeth are sharper than the permanent teeth), puppies have sharper nails, most puppies are always excited and will jump on other dogs. Your dog is actually smart if he is avoiding something that he does not like rather than attacking it.You need to study and learn about the breed you have. Labrador Retriever - Wikipedia Labradors were never mean to be aggressive or attacking types. They are very tolerant and have a lot of patience. If a Lab is aggressive there is something wrong about the way he has been raised i.e. human fault not the dog’s.

Why is my dog so afraid of plastic bags and a few other noises?

When dogs are puppies, they go through a fear stage when they decide what is scary. So sometimes they just see or hear something that scares them, even though it does them no harm, and they decide they will always be scared of that thing.

You need to get her used to some of these things - don't bring them too close at first, that may scare her more. But while you have her on leash, have someone else handling a plastic bag say 20 feet away. When she starts to look scared, just tell her in a happy voice that everything's Ok, then give her a treat. After a while she will calm down, and then the person with the plastic bag can go away. Then do the same thing again a few more times - you will see her start to react less. When she's pretty happy with it happening 20 feet away, then have the other person come a bit closer and do the same again.

Eventually she will realize the plastic bag is not the terrible thing she once thought it was. You will mess this up if you push her too far, too fast. Take several days or weeks to teach her, so that she gets it at a pace that's comfortable for her.
