How Do I Play Laptop Music On My Home Stereo

How do I connect my Laptop to my home Stereo turner, so I can play my music loud?

Get a cable that runs from your headphone jack on your laptop to the input on your stereo. It would have the normal headphone jack on one end and a red and white jack (RCA jack) on the other end. Then just set your stereo to the correct setting to use the input on it and turn up your laptop volume and your stereo volume.

Can you connect an Apple TV to a stereo system for music, in addition to HDMI to the TV?

This has already been answered well below, but here's how I do it:HDMI output of current Apple TV model goes into my receiverReceiver handles all audio decoding (including 5.1 or stereo), and has a throughput HDMI to send video (and audio if I want it, which I do not) to my TV.Thus, I can listen to audio-only (by turning on my receiver but not my TV, then streaming (pushing) the audio FROM iTunes on my phone, laptop, Mac music server, etc. TO the Apple TV. Or I can "pull" audio by turning on the TV+stereo and using AppleTV to stream audio from my Mac music server (though that means the TV is on and showing the album art, which is nice but a waste of power).Or I can stream audio from Apple Music or whereverOr I can watch AppleTVIn all of these cases, the sound comes exclusively from my stereo, which is much better at handling sound than my television.Note that I could have wired this differently, by sending HDMI from AppleTV to my TV, then using either a 'through' HDMI cable or a digital audio cable (Toslink or other) to send the audio to my stereo. That would be more setup trouble than it's worth, since that would have meant my TV would likely have to be On in order to route audio. Also, my particular TV didn't happen to have these connections. So the setup can be done several ways, depending on what stereo and TV you have. Of course, if you don't have a stereo and just want audio through your TV, then the connection is simple (but in that case, you might as well replace the audio with a kazoo and a clock radio because clearly you wouldn't care how it sounds).

5.1 Music??? how to play?

Ideally what you need is an AV (audio/video) receiver which will have the various inputs you need. In order to get 5.1 sound you must use a digital audio hookup (one cable) or 3 pairs of analog cables (6 cables). If your laptop does not have an SPDIF connector for digital audio you will have to buy a USB audio card that has an SPDIF output on it (as well as a video output), and a receiver which will have several SPDIF inputs in both coaxial and fiber optic flavors.

A sound system is a vital part of the DVD experience. You are missing a whole lot if you do not have a sound system as well as a screen to view the images on. That is why it is called an AV system. It is a system of components that work together to give you the whole experience.

There is no such thing as TRUE DTS 5.1. There is a format called Dolby Digital TRUE HD and there is a format called DTS-HD. Neither of these is compatible with a standard DVD player, only with Blu-ray. Standard DVD players support only Dolby Digital and DTS audio (5.1) and stereo audio.

A laptop with a DVD drive is a perfectly acceptable source for playing DVDs but it will have to have an SPDIF output to get the 5.1 sound from itself to a sound system. But a better solution is a stand alone DVD player which are dirt cheap now a days.

In either case you still need a sound system to hear the surround sound.

I'd suggest you do a lot of reading before you buy anything. Learn about what an AV system consists of and the various components that can be used in one. I visit two AV forums where you can get unbiased information about this. AVS forum and Home Theater Shack are two excellent sources for information. So are manufacturer web sites and AV magazine web sites.
