The other answerer is almost correct, but that method will often block Messenger from ever opening. To prevent Messenger or any other program from loading on Startup, go to Start, Run and type in 'msconfig' (without the quotation marks). In Vista or Windows 7, type 'msconfig (no quotation marks) in the address box. Then in the new window that opens, click the Startup tab, scroll down the list and un-check Yahoo! Messenger. The next time you re-boot, Messenger will not open - you can still open it at any time through the Programs list.
