Why is my computer installing updates without permission?
So I agree with David Pearson's answer. Microsoft has added some of Windows most hated features out of the basic request for security in the OS, especially by the average computer user. The two most hated are user account controls and automatic updates. This question focuses on the latter. Updates are necessary because no one, and I mean no one, writes perfect secure code. So Windows forces updates to improve the security of the OS when a vunerablilty is detected and patched. The goal is to basically immunize the community from the problem to prevent infection. It only discourages hackers and others if enough of the population is prevented from getting infected. Most home users would never update their system leaving many exposed systems. When they got exploited Microsoft would be blamed, that is their motivation. And it will always be a feature of the OS especially the basic versions, sorry. That being said (aka begin rant) I have been using Windows since I was a child, and Windows 3.1 not just 95 and later. Over the years updates have been forced on users. People complained and Microsoft has not budged on the automatic updates. What they have done, especially in the last 4 versions of Windows, have told you that they will be updating. Windows 10 especially:They put it on the login screenThey put it on the action windowIt shows up as a notification that takes up the entire window when you get closeIt is your fault you lost your data. I am a Windows Insider, this means I get full copies of Windows installed on my machine at least once a week, many times more. They tell you, you get the chance to restart on your schedule. I have ignored it too and run an overnight computation that was rebooted before I saved the result. Still though, I didn't blame the OS because I ignored their warnings. Instead I said, I should have restarted before my data run.Edit:I felt the need to perform this edit because I found a feature in Windows 10 to get more notifications about updates. I am currently on what will end up being the Creators Update and don’t know if it is in the older versions. But here we go.Go to the Start Menu and search Windows UpdateSelect Windows Update SettingsUnder Update Settings select restart options.Turn on the option to show more notifications.Be knowledgeable about when your PC will update and plan accordingly.
Should OS security updates be done with or without the permission of users?
Well, there is pro and cons. On the one side, you allow your users to stay up to date. In case of features, that allows you to have less disparities between your users. For instance if Microsoft had done that for IE6, life would have been way simpler for web developers in the last decade. On the other hand, it's against the freedom of the user. Apple has a long history of making OS updates that run poorly on older hardware, to encourage the user to switch. This + automatic update is not what I'd call ethical. So, in a perfect world, I would see no problem with that, but with great powers come great responsibilities
Why does Windows 10 get updated automatically? How can I stop it? Will there be any problems if I stop it?
There is no direct way to stop it.What you can do instead is if you are using WIFI, mark your internet connection as metered. This way windows will not automatically download the updates instead ask for your permission. Some critical updates might still be downloaded automatically. If you are on Win PRO or enterprise, then you can use the group policy editor.Open group policy editor and navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update.Double-click Configure Automatic Updates. select Enabled.Under options select Configure Automatic updates and choose Notify for downloads and install.Your updates page will say that some settings are managed by an administrator and windows will notify you about new updates.Problems? well it is now your responsibility to keep your m/c updated. Keep in mind Windows m/cs are biggest targets of all kinds of maliciousness so it makes sense to keep them always up to date.

Can Sprint take money from your account without your permission?
Last month Sprint took $150 out of my bank without permission. I called Sprint and they apologised and said I wasn't signed up for any reoccurring payments and they said it would not happen again however, they did not refund my money. This month, the same thing happened. They took out $145 from my account without permission again. Once again, they aplogised but said I would have to call my bank and my bank would have to stop the transaction. My bank said that they have to wait for 5 days and then I can dispute it. I'm tired of disputing this every month. Isn't this like stealing when they do not have permission? I've had 2 people from Sprint tell me I do not have reoccurring payment set up.
How do you stop an iPhone from automatically downloading an iOS update when on wifi and charging?
Unfortunately, the current iOS does not allow you to turn off automatic updates. I absolutely hate it as well, but there are a few temporary solutions. Note I have iOS 9 on my iPad, so this may not work with older OS.If you are concerned about iOS updates downloading over your data network, this can be turned off in Settings > iTunes & App Store. Just uncheck the mobile data and automatic downloads here.To temporarily stop the iOS update notifications, you will have to delete the downloaded update. You can find it here:Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage (under Storage, NOT iCloud Storage)Note the size of the update (you’ll need to know this below). Scroll down until you find the iOS update and delete it.Unfortunately, this is a temporary fix, since even if you turn off automatic updates over mobile, Apple, in their trollishness masked as a means to be helpful, will automatically download iOS updates whenever you are plugged in to a charger and on wifi network. I’m sure there’s mention somewhere in that massive EULA that explains how you signed away your rights to turn off automatic updates, but for all intents and purposes, they really are doing it without your consent if you don’t like them downloading it, taking up your storage, and then automatically notifying you.Since there isn’t a way of turning this off, the only other option (aside from jailbreaking your device) seems to be…simply fill up your device until there is no space left for the download. No, seriously, that’s the only other option I have been able to find after struggling with this, too. This is where knowing the size of the update is important. For instance, my update is 355MB. So I simply need to fill up my device so there is only about 350MB of free space. If anyone can find a better solution, I would love to hear it, as I prefer to not have so many apps and data cluttering my device.
