Is bad weather a good excuse to call off work?

In my area this morning we had some freezing rain but the roads were not bad as far as I was concerned. Out of our staff of 40 people 15 called off. It takes me 40 minutes to get to work in good weather and it took me only about 10 minutes longer. The news made it sound bad out but it wasn't. Why did such a high percentage call off today? I sometimes feel the weather is just a good excuse so they can stay home. Were people really afraid of the weather today or did they just feel the weather was a good reason to not make it?

Is pink eye a reason to stay home from work?

I am a counselor at a day camp and I think I'm getting pink eye. It is Saturday night and I go to work early every weekday morning.

I work with children all day and it is pretty much impossible to not have physical contact with the kids. Also, washing my hands often is impossible as we are outdoors at activities all day and rarely around sinks.

We aren't really allowed "sick days" as there are no replacements for us.

What do you think?

How do I call off work when my reason is because of pain due to my first herpes outbreak?

Just tell them that you sick. It's none of their business to know weather you have herpes. Unless you can tell them in strict confidence, I would just tell them that you have the flu, or fake a bad cold, or rough migraines, if you can take a personal day.
If you have a lot of out breaks maybe you should consider going on antiviral meds to help suppress them so the people at work wouldn't wonder why your sick so often if your out breaks are frequent..
Some times I get out breaks if I wear jeans for too long and I work in retail as well for over 9 years, but I only had herpes for over a year. If your sick then they should believe you and let you stay home. I'm sure they don't want you caughing or sniffeling over your customers.
My out breaks are not so bad now but I can remember working through the symptoms of one in the beginning and running directly home to take my meds.

Calling out of work due to snow?

Just call and explain that you are afraid to drive on treacherous roads and you don't think you can make it there safely. If the conditions are that bad, it's possible they will close anyway.

If not, it's up to you to find other transportation.

Answerers who tell you that it's not an excuse or that they commute in snow all the time don't understand what it's like to be in a city not prepared for snow. I was reading the news last night and there were people out in Portland OR who were stuck on the freeways 5-7 hours for a 10 mile commute. And busses spun out blocking intersections, so that shuts down the "take the bus" bull crap. Highways were closed, hundreds of cars were abandoned on some freeway, and the city was just shut down.

So, call and find out what your options are. Good Luck

What is your excuse to stay home from work?

Bit of a loaded question…If you mean “when working in paid employment what excuse do you use to stay home” then I use(d) the “excuse” that I was SICK, that is if I was sick and needed to stay home to a)not infect my colleagues and b)get well enough that I was able to fully do my job when I returned from being SICK I told my employer I needed to stay homeIf you mean “as a SAHM what is your excuse to stay home” I would say that you are not, as a SAHM, staying home “FROM work”… you are working at home, just with crap pay.I never needed an “excuse to stay home”, my husband and I came to the decision for me to stop being a work-out-of-the-home mum to a work-in-the-home mum… ultimately I began doing paid work FROM home, I still do that thirty years onIf I want an “excuse” to stay home FROM work, I evaluate if I can be effective in my work, and if I don’t think I can I decide I need to stay home but away from (the) work, living to fight another day

My employer is making me come to work during hurricane?

I understand your concern. I am forced to make the same choice every year during one of our lovely ice storms. The fact is that it is dangerous. It will be raining heavy, things will be flying around and I know even trying to drive in heavy rain alone is difficult sometimes. I think that wednesday morning you should get up a little earlier than normal to give yourself time to make it to work as if were a normal day, just in case it's just rain etc. If you feel like you could make it, in that type of weather go. If conditions just seem to dangerous to you, call in. I am sure you wouldn't be the only one doing so, and surley they arent going to fire a bunch of people for protecting your own lives. And if they did fire you for it, then you really dont want a job that doesnt care if you get killed or not. You can tell your boss it isnt the military and you didnt sign up to die for the company. I call in at least 2 or 3 times every winter because of the ice, and my boss gets peeved but has never fired me yet. Just be ready to go to work in the morning and then play it by ear. Trust your gut on these sort of things. Good luck, and stay safe!
