Once I mute a group on WhatsApp, why do the notifications keep popping up? Doesn't WhatsApp understand the meaning of mute?
Yes my friend whatsapp understands it correctly .Probably You have not stopped notification , you just mute the soundWhen you press mute on any group ,There is extra checkbox for asking SHOW NOTIFICATION , uncheck that and you are doneYou will no longer recieve notification for that group!

I dont think thats possible, You cant unless you delete the Contact on the phone and linked via email,but there are workarounds. Just Block the Contact In Whatsapp,and if you dont want people to know who it is, change the name and then block. GroupMe is a good Android app for group chats, however, I would strongly recommend trying a different method of communication, such as Slack, for large groups. I have a club of about 30 people who play Dungeons and Dragons together, and we all thought there should be a group text. However, when we tried to create one, the amount of texts got so unmanageable that people stopped reading them and muted or blocked the thread - thus rendering it nearly useless. Another issue was that many peoples' phones failed to register the correct group of people (missing numbers etc.), and whenever they replied it would open a new thread with those people. We ended up with about fifteen different threads, which made it so everyone was confused and deleted them all. We haven't used the chat for a long time now - it’s more effective for us to simply text people individually and forward it to other people in the group. Not to mention that only one of us had the contact list, so nobody knew who anyone was and it was almost impossible to get the names because by the time we started asking, most of us had already blocked the chat. So in short, don't try a group chat with more than six or seven people. It just doesn't work well.
