Can we connect a set-top box with a smart LED TV?

The ideal HD setup is to run HDMI from Blu-ray and cable box to the receiver and then run an HDMI from the receiver to the TV. But you have a home theater in the box and HTIBs really aren't very good when it comes to flexibility and connection ports. If you want surround sound you have to run audio through the theater system, but if you want HD video you want to avoid the theater system and run it straight to the TV. There is really no good way to do this, but the best way is to run HDMI video from the player to the TV and optical audio from the player to the receiver. Then do the same with the cable box as best you can. What you should do is buy an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver. That way you can run the HDMI from the cable box and the Blu-ray player into the receiver (which is attached to the speakers) and then an HDMI from the receiver out to the TV. That's the only way you'll be fully HD.

You can decide whether you want to tell them the circumstances under which it failed, since they may say it's your fault for not using a surge protector. You need a good, high-capacity surge protector. Get one in the electrical department of a home improvement center or hardware store. If you didn't already have one, that's most likely why your cable box is fried.
