Why do I feel as if my life isn't real?

It is very possible and likely that you have Depersonalization-Derealization Syndrome, also known as just Depersonalization Disorder. Seems like you perceive the world as 'Foggy, dreamlike or like a videogame.' These are common and key symptoms of DPD. This can be the cause of Anxiety, panic attacks, self-harm, depression, low self-esteem and even chest pain, nausea, drowsiness, lack of motive/motivation & blurry vision. Attention impairments and hypersomnia are also common symptoms. DDS/DPD is believed to be caused largely by severe traumatic life events. These include;Surviving/Experiencing a Natural disasterHaving had experienced a Severe accident were loss of life and/or chronic injury likely occurred, like a major car accident/pileup or a plane crash. Returning from War or a WarzoneTorture/Severe or cruel punishmentThe result of a bad experience to a drug or multiple drugs. Being traumatically and/or consistantly abused for a relatively significant portion of your childhood by a parent, guardian, sibling, etc.Treatment, as of now, is mostly done by CBT which stands for 'Cognitive Behavioural Therapy'. It is aimed at treating patients by helping them to learn to reinterpret their symptoms in a non-threatning way. This has been largely successful in treating or at least Significantly helping most patients.Treatment may also include medications, though none have been shown to have a significant effect. An SSRI Antidepressant and a Benzodiazepine is sometimes prescribed for those with who often experience anxiety with DPD/DDS. Modafinil has also been shown to be effective in some groups namely those whose most prominant symptoms are hypersomia, feeling of drowsiness, and attention impairment. Some Evidence also supports the medications Naloxone and Naltrexene in treatment.

Why do I feel like this life is just a dream?

My guess is that you have some anxiety issues. I don't want to sound presumptuous but it's likely that you may be stressed by the situations (or former situation) in your life.

When some people have issues that they feel helpless in resolving, their anxiety can develop into a form of "avoidance behaviour" which may graduate to feelings of being in a "daydream" state. It's a survival instinct: your brain's method of avoiding the reality of painful, subconscious memories. Sometimes, this can progress to "creating" another reality - a private "world" with less pain.

If you are the type of person who has some difficulty expressing your feelings, or sticking up for yourself, then it's very likely you've been containing your anger - if you've been in a suppressing family/relationship/work situation that has been, and still is, crushing your spirits.

I don't know you, so it's difficult to be sure. But I have known a few people with the same "daydream" condition. It's fairly common in those who are shy, sensitive, creative types. Do you have recurrent feelings that you don't belong, or do you sometimes wish you'd been born in an earlier day and age? Well, this can eventuate when young people have been traumatised in childhood.

If so, over time, this can develop into a sensation of being in a dream, which may really be extended shock or post-traumatic stress.

If this is something you identify with, I would say that you need to address the problem soon. Speak to a doctor/therapist and get some help with pinpointing what it is that's stressing you out, because, most times, we're just not aware of the workings of our deep-seeded, subconscious mind.

Professional help will settle you, and give you some relief from the load that (I believe) you may be carrying.

What does it feel like being on life support?

I just wanted to know what it feels like, I know the feeling isn't great because today my father went to the hospital and told me and my mother, "What ever happens, please don't let them put me on life support." Thats how this question popped up.

How does married life feel?

You do indeed make many sacrifices for your children. My wife and I don't enjoy the freedom we had before we had children, and we do try to get away for a little while once a month or so, but we have found that the sacrifice is one we happily make. Our children give us hope for the future. It is an honor, a privilege, and our greatest joy to care for them, and teach them to go forward and prepare to shape the future better than we did.
