How do you tell real friends from fake friends?
Real Friends Will call you and invite you out Never tell your secrets And will always be nice to you no matter what Fake Friends Won't call you and will try to avoid you when their out. Also fake ones will probably only use you for certain things, like homework, and stuff. They will try and be nice to you, only because they know they have to.

fake friends are only around when it's to their benefit. favors also tend to be one way (in their favor). real friends are around because they enjoy your company, and the relationship is mutually beneficial. signs of fake friends: 1. they only call you when they want something 2. they do not respond you contact them 3. they tend to 'disapear' when you are not useful to them sign of real friends: 1. they call out of the blue, just to see how you are if you have not seen them for a while 2. they respond to you when you contact them 3. they are cognizant and compassionate about you and the events of your life.
How do you tell the "fake" friends from the "real" friends these days?
For me personally, having my babby and going through PPD showed me who me real friends are. My "online friends" - i.e. all the lovely people I have met off this forum, have been there for me more than my "real life" friends. I have one person in my "real life" whom I can honestly call a real friend - my friend who is also 100 odd miles away at uni. Our friendship has surivived my having a babby, my going though depression and her being 100 odd miles away. My old real life friends couldn't understand my illness, and so therefore they are not my true friends. I know it's very hard to judge a person's character fully via the internet, but when these people are willing to read pages of pages of why you're feeling so rotten, and actually try and make you feel better - it makes me want to jump through the screen and give them a massive cuddle for taking the time to do that. .. I'm kinda rambling, but I hope you get my drift.... :)

this is from personal experience True Friend: 1) They like spending time with you, and they'll ask you to hang out with them 2) If they're with other people they won't pretend like they don't know you 3) they'll listen to you when you need a shoulder to cry on 4) they'll do favors for you and don't expect anything in return Fake Friend: 1) they'll call or text you once in a while if they need a favor or to borrow money 2) they'll make lame excuses why they can't hang out 3) they'll say you're their friend but constantly insult you or put you down hope that answered your question :)
