How Do You Reduce Pain From Braces

Reduce The Pain From Braces...?

I have braces now and I find the best thing to do is eat ice cream or cold food, I find that Advil and Tylenol doesn't do anything. Booster Juice is really good to. Hopefully your teeth won't hurt as long as mine did when I got my braces. You will also get pain after you get them tightened, sometimes its worse than other times. You'll get through it, the months go surprisingly fast. I find my teeth are ALWAYS hurting but you get used to the pain, but it still hurts when you get them tightened. Make sure that once you get your braces off you wear your retainer so that you don't have to get braces again. Good luck!!! =)

Should I drink milk to reduce pain for braces?

No but when you first get them on try drinking something hot like tea or broth. The heat expands the wire and makes them hurt less. So cold stuff will shrink it and make them hurt more. When i first got braces i could feel them expand when i had something hot and it made them feel better but not make the pain actually go away-just be more bearable and give you a moment of relief. The sensitivity goes away in about 2 days and then you really cant tell when you drink hot or cold stuff. for me day one was moving soreness then day 2 was scraping against my cheeks soreness- so stock up on the wax!

How to treat braces pain?

I had braces too and I still feel the pain looking back! I just had to touch a tooth for it to ache unbelievable!
everyone goes through this and its perfectly normal. The good news is that the first time you get the braces put in is the worst. It'll hurt a little whenever they get tightened but never as much as this.

The reason they hurt is because basically, you're teeth are being forced out of their position into another one.

The pain should only last for a week, two at the very most. Painkillers can take the edge off, if you're having trouble to sleep, painkillers like co-codamol can make you sleepy to deal with this problem. When I had my tonsils removed I was in a lot of pain too and I took different kinds of painkillers, i.e. ibuprofen based pills and paracetamol based ones, and I found this helped more than taking just one kind of painkiller.

When My teeth were hurting I basically kept my mind busy by thinking of other things. It sounds cliche but pain really is in the mind and while its impossible to completely ignore it, if your mind is focused on other things the pain won't get to you as much.

In the meantime, eat soft foods or whatever you can manage. You only got the braces yesterday so the pain will dull in a day or so. Just think of the reward you'll be getting - a lovely smile, and it will make it SO worth all the hassle!

How do you treat pain produced by the rubber bands in braces?

The other answers were really good but I'd like to add that some pain is normal and should go away. Excessive pain is not normal and should be brought to your orthodontist’s attention immediately. If your orthodontist does not satisfy your concerns, consult another orthodontist immediately.

How to reduce swollen gums with braces?

i've had braces since october of last year and just recently in january i got my braces tightened for the first time and they put and elastic over the bottom brackets to start closes some of the bottom spaces. well since then my gums at the bottom started swelling and its swollen to the point were it makes my bottom teeth look really short and i cant floss. i went to the ortho back in march to get them tightened again and they put the elastics on the top to start closing the gap and they told me that they couldnt start back closing the bottom spaces because my gums are swollen. they showed me what to do and it looked easy when they did it but when i try to do it i dont see any results. can someone help me and give me somethings to do to reduce the swelling? i go backon the 16th of this month and i would like them to start closing the bottom spaces again

Help!!! How do I reduce pain during braces tightening today?

Taking a fairly strong pain killer an hour before the treatment should keep the pain away for several hours.
Topical anaesthetic rubbed on your gums should be available from the orthodontist or even a drugstore (be sure it is one safe for internal use - consult the druggist)
Oil of cloves is a natural remedy to add to the pain killers, available at health food stores and pharmacies. It is used frequently for teething babies and after extractions for those who cannot tolerate some pain medications.
Using a clean cold compress on your gums will also help ease the pain. Grandmothers used that many years ago, effectively.
Sometimes, gargling gently with warm salt water helps too.

How can I treat pain caused by my braces' elastics?

You can use regular painkillers. The same you would use for a headache for example. But don’t expect the pain to go away, specially if it is very strong. You should always give feedback to your dentist with the amount of pain you have, and he will prescribe the propper medication. If it hurts too bad, he probably went a little too far tightening the braces and elastics. The problem is that it will not hurt that bad at the time, it starts to ache about 1h later.Freezing cold water also helps. I use to keep a huge glass in my desk and drank it continuously to soothe the pain. I never liked to take meds.

How long does the braces pain last?

It varies because each orthodontist works a little differently. Some use more pressure than others. Also, patients vary in their sensitivity to pain. But generally, I have found that after a few days, the pain diminishes and disappears. Some patients never have pain. Also, as treatment progresses, most patients tolerate adjustments with less discomfort than at the beginning of treatment. What I mean is that after about six months into treatment an adjustment is easily tolerated that would be very painful if done in the first week of treatment.
