Why should self-defense be taught in school?
Self-defense should absolutely be allowed in schools.Normally, I advocate the opposite extreme- there’s no time when you should ever fight back unless you or a loved one are at immediate risk of physical or mental harm.School is the exception. In school, students are essentially stripped of their rights and cut off from protection. If they encounter systematic bullying, they can’t do anything about it!It’s not like a bar or nightclub, where you can leave as soon as trouble brews. It’s not like a workplace, where a union is an option or legal action. They can’t even ask for protection from authority figures; if they ask for help, they get labeled a snitch and the harassment doubles. No, school policy forces them to repeatedly go to the same place, at the same times, over and over and over with little possibility of escape.That’s why bullying is so awful at schools, and why this is the one and only time I advocate fighting back as an option for harassment.No-tolerance policies are far worse for the victims.
