How Does College Work

How does college work? I'm confused?

First, you have to apply to UAB. It is during the application prices that most people decide their major, you don't have to, but it will make everything else easier. If you don't know, your major is essentially the title of your degree. Your schedule for your time in college is based off you major. Because you're thinking about pre-med or pre-dentistry. My advice to you is to choose a major in something you love and take the courses needed to get into Medical or Dentistry school on the side. But back to your original question, upon getting accepted to UAB, you'll more than likely will be required to attend orientation. It's at orientation where you'll be able to register for classes and talk to a counselor. Because you're just starting out, a lot of the initial courses that you'll be taking will be prerequisites to classes you'll be taking later during your collegiate journey. When you sign of for classes, it usually states what the prequistes are to take that class; moreover, during orientation and counseling appointments, you can speak with a counselor to see if you're on the right track and to better clarify what classes you'll need in order to graduate on time.

How does college work?

Sorry if the question is too broad, but I tried looking at some universities and community college websites, and I'm just confused of how college works. Well, if you could help, it would be good. Try not to worry about how long your answer will be, just explain as much as you can.

HOW DOES COLLEGE WORk?

In a US university, you apply to the college you want to attend. Once you are accepted, you begin taking general ed/ core classes before selecting your major. Occasionally you may have to apply for a specific major, but that is very unusual.

Medical school, Law School and MBA programs are GRADUATE programs. You apply for those your senior year in college or (more commonly) after college when you've been working a few years.

BA degrees in finance are not available at any Ivies that I can think of. Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Columbia do not have undergraduate finance programs.

If you really plan on going to an Ivy level school, I think you need to do some serious research ASAP. I'm not trying to be mean, but those are competitive schools and you don't seem to know how college works. I'm guessing your parents aren't college graduates or at least not US college grads. There are loads of books out there and your local library should be able to point out some books. I'd also recommend meeting with your guidance counselor.

How does having a band in college work?

I don't know who would tell you that you shouldn't go to college if you are in a band. I won't.

Realistically, you aren't going to be able to do much with your current band, unless you all happen to end up in the same area. It's going to be a lot easier for you to join a new band at your college.

The college administration probably doesn't care about bands unless it is an extremely conservative religious college. At my college, there was a student club created specifically to host and promote live music events on campus. There was also a battle of the bands, festival stages, and gigs at coffee houses or house parties. And of course, there is the possibility of getting onto the campus radio station or even the campus TV station if there is one.

As far as having time to practice, write, or record goes, that's up to you to make that time in your schedule. Obviously it will be difficult to reconcile being in a band with activities that will take up a lot of your time, like a part time job, a fraternity/sorority, or a difficult set of courses like you would take for pre-med.

How does the electoral college work?

The election for President is really 51 individual elections, one for each state plus DC. The USA is a republic, not a democracy.

Each state gets a specific number of electoral votes total to the number of Reps and Senators that state has. All but 2 states have a winner-take-all system. That means if California goes 50.1% for Obama and 49.9% for McCain, then the winner (Obama) gets all 55 of California's electoral votes. Obama won that state. When all the voting is done, you add up each of the 51 races and the winner is the one with the most electoral votes.

This means that a candidate has to campaign in most states. If it were just a popularity contest, then a candidate could win the 5 or so most populous states and completely ignore the rest.

How does a two hour snow delay work in college?

Most colleges will post campus opens at a certain time. Like 11 am opening. I have never heard of them posting a two hour delay, because class start at different times in the morning. but classes that would of started in the am are canceled, nothing gets "moved up". so if they have an 11 am start- all classes that begin before 11am do not meet.
