Why did the Spanish empire disintegrate so much earlier than the other European empires?
Of the major seafaring European powers (England, Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands), Spain and Portugal were the first to launch seafaring explorations explicitly to discover new trade routes. The Spaniards were the first to “discover” the New World, the Americas, in 1492. Within 1550, they had established the first worldwide empire, taking over all of South America (except for Brazil, which went to the Portuguese. But the Iberian Union later, which conjoined Spain and Portugal, meant that Spanish Empire effectively controlled all of SA).The Spanish Empire, mining massive amounts of gold and silver, then sending them over the Atlantic Ocean in massive treasure fleets, became enormously wealthy. So why did the Spanish Empire disintegrate so soon?Firstly, the Spanish Empire made many enemies and became overextended. In the 1500s, the Spanish Emperor also became the Holy Roman Emperor, in effect meaning that Spain controlled Austria as well. Around this time, however, Holland, England, and various breakaway Protestant German states raised trouble. Most of Spain’s finances and efforts were dedicated to fighting off these menaces, draining the treasury. Charles V himself abdicated due to fatigue.Secondly, Spanish society was stagnant. Crucially, a viable middle-class never arose. In England, a new merchant class was made rich through trade in the New World, in Holland a similar manifestation, and in France, the famous bourgeoisie originated from this time. In Spain however, most of the wealth was funneled into the Court and the nobility and Church. Yes, a few aspiring entrepreneurs went and became famous. But on the whole, colonial administrators, plantation owners, soldiers, were all nobles. As such, they were already secure in their wealth and had no ambition, no drive, no motivation to drive them to more riches. Eventually, the Spanish economy stagnated as a result.Finally, a combination of civil wars, piracy by the English, and court corruption led to the decline of the Spanish Empire. The invasion by Napoleon sealed the fate of Spain, with colonies seeing Spanish weakness and declaring independence a few short years later. Happy 72nd independence day.Hope, from now on we and our country will make a new tryst with destiny and will work towards realizing the real independent India that our forefathers and our freedom leaders dreamt of.So, speaking about the celebrations today, we here at NITJ had a ceremony of flag hosting in the morning to salute and pay respect to our national flag and pay tribute to our leaders.Since, I am in NCC, so I had to be early for the March past.We had a wonderful show of March past. Many students and teachers attended it.But what made me feel sorry are the students. Not many had time from their early morning sleep to come for an hour and pay respect to the flag. This freedom to sleep which everybody enjoys is the result of years of struggle of our freedom fighters. And we don't have a little time for the flag.Anyways, after this the 3rd year NCC cadets were awarded with their ‘B’ certificates.After this all the people marched to Central Seminar Hall for the cultural acts that were prepared by various clubs of our college. Every act just had one messege, and this should be the messege which all of us and our leaders should spread, the messege of LOVE.U can't we all I our country, and countries together stay in peace. Because, eventually, it is humanity that should survive.After that, refreshments were given to all those present. After that BAWRE club of our college organized a play titled “YE KAISI AZAADI’. The message was to tell the society the evils between us flourishing in the name of cultures and religion.Also, the best thing is that, Iwith few of my friends planted small plants. Also, then one sir told us about the real messege of SWATCHCHA BHARAT ABHIYAN. That it is the people together that can make our country clean. Nobody else. So, we all should understand our duty towards keeping our society clean and deliver our part of service to the county.Then at 2 in the noon, TEAM CULTURAL AFFAIRS, organized the show of movie PARMANU. Literally, our scientists made us proud and put India on the map of the world.A big salute of everyone, the freedom fighters, scientists and more importantly, the INDIAN ARMY, which even on this day, when everyone else is celebrating, they are fully alert at the border so that we can have our celebrations with worrying about our securityJai Hind. ☺️.
