These act as Nucleation sites for the carbon dioxide and cause most the the dissolved CO2 to escape as a gas. There is no explosion (sudden chemical oxidation) as such due to this release of gas, but if the bottle is sealed air-tight, then the sudden release of large volumes of CO2 gas can increase the pressure in the bottle to cause it to rupture and burst.
