Curb distance for parallel parking in NJ?

According to NJ Law how far do I have to be from the curb for parallel parking? I can parallel park the car fine but I thought I heard I have to be 6 inches from the curb? That's proving to be impossible because every SINGLE TIME I park it I'm maybe a foot away. Please tell me how far I need to be because I'm going to lose it!

What is the suggested distance from the curb when parallel parking?

Most jurisdictions require you to park within 1 foot or 30cm from the curb, but you'd have to check your local parking ordinances to be sure for where you are. Failing to park within the prescribed distance from the curb may result in you receiving a ticket. This is especially the case if your vehicle is protruding in to the driving lane and causing an obstruction to traffic. Most officers that I know wouldn't write the ticket unless it was a blatant violation (over a meter away from the curb, back end of the vehicle sticking into traffic, etc.) But I'm sure there are some sticklers for the letter of the law out there.

Can you fail your nys road test for parking too far from the curb when parallel parking?

No...

The passenger car road test usually takes about 15 minutes. It will test your ability to make basic maneuvers needed in everyday driving.

You will have to make left and right turns, stop at intersections controlled by stop signs and traffic lights, and to parallel park. You also will be asked to turn your vehicle around in a narrow street (three-point turn) and to drive in fairly heavy traffic.

Follow the examiner's instructions. The license examiner will be looking for you to demonstrate basic driving skills and knowledge of traffic laws. He or she is not there to trick you into making mistakes or committing traffic violations.

During your test, the examiner will point out mistakes you make and will give you information that will help you correct them. Relax, and listen to what the examiner tells you. He or she may have you repeat a maneuver to see if you can correct a mistake you made earlier.

During the test, the examiner must assess a "negative" score for important safe driving mistakes.

To pass, you must not accumulate more than 30 negative points.

Automatic disqualification can result from making a dangerous driving action or a serious violation of traffic laws, or becoming involved in an accident.
