How Frequently Is The Hm Rating Available In The Navy

After Navy OCS - is Navy Corpsman an available career path?

I'm anticipating using my BA to join the Navy as an Officer and am currently work in a local area hospital, and would love to continue in this field. But I am a bit confused concerning available jobs once OCS is complete. Am I only able to choose from specific Officer assigned jobs/careers, or am I still able to choose from, what is listed on the Navy website as, Enlisted positions. Hospital Corpsman requirements are stated as follows:

"You are not required to have a four-year college degree to become a Hospital Corpsman."

So does that eliminate any Officer from the field? I am planning on speaking to a recruiter very soon to answer several more detailed questions - but I was real concerned about this topic, mainly because it could effect my future plans in education. All information is greatly appreciated.

Is U.S Navy Corpsman (HM) an available rating usually?

I just started the enlistment process and am waiting for the recruiter to get my MEPS date. I really only desire one of two ratings, being HM(corpsman) or MA(master at arms).. I DO prefer HM as its my main goal and want to do field corpsman. So I have a few questions for you all. (1) Is the navy currently looking for HM's? (2) How available is HM usually at MEPS? (3) Is it rude or what not to refuse any ratings if those two are not available? (4) Ive heard that sometimes if you tell your recruiter that you are only going to enlist if you can get your desired rating that he WILL make you get it, true?
Thanks so much and thanks for serving our country to all the veterans out there, you gave me opportunity to leave in peace now i will give back.

Is HM a Hard Rate to Get in the Navy?

Very much so. The entire Navy is full and every month they are chopping people all over the Fleet for any reason they can find. The recession and budget cuts/debt play a huge role in it. HM has always been an overmanned rate. Promotion is extremely slow unfortunately, to the point that many are kicked out before they are promoted because they have been a certain rank too long.

I am going for Navy Corpsman (HM). I wish to advance as much and as fast as I can. Is this a good rate then?

I hear rumors after rumors. If anyone really knows please help. I kinda got stuck with HM because it was one of the few jobs. And I heard that after 2 years you can switch your rate. 1)Is this true and also 2)is the advancement fast on this rate-I know it depends on what you do and how well you do it and your higher ups. But compared to other rates how well is advancement for HM´s?

I am going in the US Navy as an HM-8406 corpsman, what NEC in the HM rate has the fastest promotion rates?

None most HM's are E-3 or E-4 by the time they hit their 4 year mark and to make 2nd good luck on that end.
