How Good Are Those Hand-held Jigsaws

How to cut wooden dowels without jigsaw?

I have 1/4" tubular dowels and I've tried to use a power tool miter saw, a jig saw, a hand jig saw. The power tool completely split my wood. The power jigsaw does nothing, the hand jig saw makes a clean cut but it takes FOREVER! I'm wanting to cut at least 60 3" pieces so you can imagine how horribly tiring that can get. Any advice?

Is it a good idea to turn a manual jigsaw into a table one? I don't really think I should have a circular saw.

Another person gave a great response, with lots of pros and cons. But I would flat out say no for 2 simple reasons. Using a upside-down table mounted jigsaw is a bad idea because a jigsaw blade is thin which allows for it to cut curves while handheld but would cause the blade to “wander” while feeding material through it. What your imagining is better served with a bandsaw. But in my mind whether your feeding your material through a table saw, a bandsaw or an upside down jigsaw, your still feeding your hands near moving blades. So also safety, you are better learning about the table saw and using it safely as opposed to a jerry rigged jig. For the love of your fingers, use a tool for its intended purpose.

How do I change a broken jigsaw blade?

There should be one or two screws where the blade attaches near the body. Unscrew those and the old blade will drop out. Install a new one in reverse BUT there are several types of jig saw blades so take the old one with you to the store so you can match up the shank of the blade.

Is there such a thing as a manual jigsaw?

I need to make some wood cuts that one would normally do with an electric jigsaw (hand-held or floor model). I'll go out and buy a hand held one if I have to, but I very much enjoy using manual tools where possible.

Can anyone tell me what kind of manual hand saw I should be looking for? What did people use before the electric jig saw was invented?

How can I make clean cuts with less chipout using my jigsaw?

The right blade makes all the difference, even more so with an orbital jigsaw at faster speeds than normal. The blade on the right has no set and will cut much cleaner. These types of blades can be purchased with longer blades than most and also you can choose whether the teeth face upwards or downwards. For cleaner cuts at faster speeds, you will need to purchase a jigsaw with orbital action. and although you will use it at a normal speed it will be much slower than the fast pace that the orbital action is capable. In other words, the slower the cut the better the quality. If speed is important then just go for it. Full orbital, full speed, and full pressure. You will be pleasantly surprised by how clean or how fast these jigsaws can cut.A circular sawing motion just as in hand sawing produces a faster cut.It is the orbital jigsaw that you require, not just what they call reciprocal action, that all jig and demolition saws have. You may be also interested in this related jigsaw Quora answer. What is the difference between a jigsaw and reciprocating saws?Or this one.It is my most viewed woodworking Quora answer and its related to power tools. It has over 17,000 views and 7 upvotes. How do you fix a stuck drill chuck on a DeWalt drill?ORHow do you drill into the brick without a hammer drill?

What is the difference between a jigsaw and a scroll saw?

Other differences are:

Scroll saws are generally table or bench mounted. They are generally capable of tighter radius cuts, finer detail as the blades are supported at both ends of and kept in tension, they have a table that the work is supported by as you guide the work through the blade.

Jig saws are hand held, will not be able to make as tight a radius cut as the blades tend to be wider and supported only from the top, capable of a wide application of cuts and materials to be cut.

Hope this helps.

What is the difference from a circular saw and a jigsaw?

The more useful of the two tools will be the circular saw. This would be true whether your building a playhouse or coffee table. More specifically circular saws are specifically for cutting wood to proper measurements. Jigsaws are for detail or decorative cuts such as curves or other patterns. You might also wish to buy a straightedge to go with the circular which you can clamp to the wood to make straight cuts easier.

What is the difference between a scroll saw and a jigsaw?

“Jigsaw” is a term that has been used to label two significantly different tools, so it's difficult to tell without context. One “jigsaw” is also known as a “saber saw”, which is a handheld power tool with a relatively narrow straight blade (about 3/8") that is held by the tool from one end pushed and pulled by the mechanism. It can be used for plunge cutting and rough free-hand cutting of curved shapes in wood and light metal.Image source: Wikimedia Commons File:Decoupeerzaag.jpgThe other “jigsaw” is also known as a “scroll saw”, which is a fixed power tool with a table. The saw blade is very skinny, 1/8″ or less, and is held from both ends under tension by the machine. It cuts a very narrow kerf, and can cut slowly and finely to make interlocking pieces as with a jigsaw puzzle.Image source: Wikimedia Commons File:Herramientas de aula de tecnología 05.JPGThe hand-held, unpowered version of a scroll saw is most often known as a “coping saw”, because it is commonly used for coping to make a close mating joint between pieces of profiled material.Image source: Wikimedia Commons File:Coping saw 2.jpg
