They are not the newest software, but they are still usable. You could upgrade if you really wished too. Get a refurbished mac directly from apple and extend the warranty to 3 years just in case (If you buy a refurbished mac directly from apple you automatically get a 1 year warranty.) Honestly for me they are no cons because they are pretty much as good as new besides the logic board and that isn't usually damaged.

Is it a good idea to buy a refurbished MacBook Air?

If the refurbished MacBook Air is refurbished from Apple themselves. ABSOLUTELY! - If it is from a third party? I can only say that buyer beware. While most of the refurbished Mac’s and iPhones I have purchased in the past have all been great including from third party sellers. I still play it Safe. You can get a great deal on a refurbished MacBook Air, typically several hundreds less than a brand-new one. Chances are if Apple refurbished the MacBook Air, when you open the box for the first time you will not be able to tell the difference between a brand new MacBook Air and the refurbished other than the packaging. That being said there are a few things to take into consideration rather the MacBook Air or any computer for that matter is refurbished, or being sold as used.Even if the computer is in pristine condition, works flawlessly, You need to be aware of the Year the computer was manufactured. Apple from time to time moving in a forward mentality will stop supporting certain model years of a computer. So, when shopping for a USED or Refurbished Mac/Book/Air/Pro you need to keep this in mind and try to get one closes to the current year. While a late 2012 MacBook Pro is supported by the latest version of macOS Mojave, does not mean the next version of macOS will support it.So, while someone may have MacBook Pro 13.3″ with say 16 GB of Ram 1 TB SSD etc. it would be safer to buy a 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 models. as the late 2012 may no longer be supported and although, you will be still be able to use the older model, you will begin to experience the not supported soon enough. A late 2012 Model as of this writing is now 7 years old. I would cautiously buy one today. I certainly, would not pay anything over $300 for it.

Should I buy a refurbished MacBook?

There are different kinds of refurbished Macs: Refurbished by Apple. These are usually about a year old but sometimes up to 3 years. They are factory refurbished and come with the standard 1 year Apple Limited Hardware warranty and are available for Applecare. The only downside to getting one of these is that they are usually an older generation with in my opinion is minor. The only reason not to buy an Apple Refurbished computer is if you need the newest technology, otherwise it's a great buy. Highly recommend Applecare on them!Refurbished by a Apple Specialist. This is not quite the same as Apple refurbished but the next best thing. They'll usually take out a few damaged parts and resell it. Usually it's minor problems and they may have gotten a batch of them and made a few working machines. It's a decent buy and usually it comes with at least 90 days of warranty from the reseller. Be careful but you're probably okay if they're a reputable company. Recommend haggling as they probably got it for between 10%-40% of what they're asking for it. Online refurbished. This is the riskiest in my opinion. They are usually computers that were purchased in lots from schools and have had a rough time. They were hastily repaired in the dozen by technicians who are liable to miss things. They often use substandard parts (especially batteries and power adapters) and generally offer limited to no warranty. My advice on these, if it's the only thing you can afford, it's better than nothing. There are of course ranges where some are a great deal while others are a total ripoff. Look into the seller and see if they have a good reputation. See what kind of warranty they offer and how they handle broken machines within the warranty period. Refurbished can be good from Apple to bad from the worst resellers that are barely a step up from buying on eBay or Craigslist. Still they aren't all bad and if you do your research, you can find a great deal. Final word: you mentioned MacBooks. Apple hasn't made MacBooks since 2010 which means that any machine would be at least 4 years old, even refurbished. That's a old machine. Stick to MacBook Pros or Macbook Airs, both of which got great in 2011.

Should I buy a used or refurbished macbook?

I would go with the referb.

Buying it from a reputable source like amazon is a good idea because of there return policy.

Referbs are normally safe. Some one could have cracked the screen or popped out a key and sent it in and no its a referb. Buy from seller with good feedback.

Used from a private seller is more risky. But they both have there own amount of risk.

Refurbished MacBook Pro safe?

There's nothing wrong with getting a refurbished laptop, it has gone through all of the same inspections as the new laptops and it gets all the same warranties, accessories etc. as the new laptop. People just think that 'refurbished' means something bad but honestly it's a better deal than buying a new laptop. I've got a refurbished Mac and it is excellent, absolutely nothing wrong with it and I saved $200 :)

Which is good to buy Mackbook Pro or refurbished macbook pro. Both ratina, 15". See question details ?

Get the new one and don't worry about the shipping. They have the same RAM, the 512GB should be sufficient, the difference in chip speed is not that important. Now if one has SSD storage and the other has a hard disk, ignore anything else and get the one with SSD at any price.Otherwise save the money and get the new one with slower clock and less storage. It will do the job for you.

What are the cons of buying a refurbished MacBook Air or MacBook Pro?

It depends on where you're buying it. If you're buying a refurbished Mac from Apple, you're essentially buying a new Apple computer. It will look new, come in a box that besides the labeling looks the same, it will come with a 1 year warranty like a new one, and is eligible for AppleCare Protection Plan like a new computer. Buying refurbished from Apple is like getting a huge discount for a new computer. If you're buying from anywhere else, the best tip I can tell you is to go to one of the better known and reputable refurbished outfits like http://www.gainsaver.com, http://www.macofalltrades.com, or https://www.powermax.com. Make sure they offer some kind of warranty; at least 90 days, and ideally offer an option to increase it. A lot of Apple Specialists offer Certified Pre-Owned Macs which are essentially used or refurbished machines. They typically come with 90 day warranties and are pretty good as well.

Buying a refurbished Macbook Pro from Ebay?

IF the seller has proof that they have been refurbished by Apple, and not some other company, then I think you're pretty safe.

I would just make sure that they have a decent return policy and a good feedback rating. And if/when you get the machine, be sure you have ample time to put the machine through its paces to make sure you're happy with it.

Enjoy your Mac. I sure enjoy mine.

Hope this helps.

Are DoubleDex MacBooks just as good as Apple refurbished?

If you looking for machine for half the price with better specifications, you should get in mind DoubleDex, but you will get just 30 day warranty, so if anything happens you should pay extra more money for hardware or software issues. So my advice is to look for Refurbished MacBooks directly from Apple Store.
