How Hard Is It To Get Into William And Mary

Is the College of William and Mary really hard to get into?

Yes it is extremely difficult to get into but you could have a shot assuming you have a good explanation for your sophomore year and that you have some killer extra curricular activities. W&M looks for well-rounded students so make sure you have something else to offer the college than just some A's and a good SAT score.

Also, being in-state helps.

Just keep in mind that last year, there were only about 1200 spots for freshmen with an average SAT score higher than UVA.

Can I get into William and Mary?

have a 4.25 GPA
I have 28 College Credits.
I am taking the most difficult classes at my school, not AP because my school does not offer AP.
I am in three clubs. National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Envirothon.
I am the President of Mu Alpha Theta.
I tutor in all math and science classes.
I have a combined SAT Score of 1400 (M, R, W)
I am number one in my class.
And, I live in state.

How hard is it to get into William and Mary?

William & Mary accepts ~30% of applicants, and your SAT score is about average.

W&M is an unusual school, with a largely "centrist" student body, but a very liberal administration. Thankfully, political indoctrination does not intrude much in the classroom.
Some sense of how W&M students look at issues can be found in this passage in the student newspaper:
[The administration tried to ban beer pongs]
"Do we wish to be the poor man who can only say, 'First they came for beer pong, and I did not speak up because I did not play. Then they came for beer bongs, and I said nothing because I did not own one. Finally, they came for my Solo cups, and no one was inebriated enough to speak out for my drink?' No, surely we do not. Now is the time for action. Restore Honor. Restore Sanity. Restore Beer Pong."

What do I need to do to get into William and Mary or UVA?

DON'T enroll in IB. That is SUCH a bad idea if you are already struggling in your classes. IB programs are incredibly rigorous and it is more important to get good grades in "okay" to moderately hard classes than to get okay/bad grades in IB classes. IB doesn't really help that much anyway when applying to college. I answered your previous question and this is what I think of your situation:
If you can show an upward trend in your grades your junior and senior year then your low grades freshman year won't matter as much (sophomore year still matters a bit). If you can pull all your grades up to A-/A with few B+ then I think you have a fairly good shot at getting into some good schools. One thing that I definitely learned from watching my friends when they applied to college were that the most successful applicants were the ones who weren't enrolled in EVERY single AP and honors class. Kids who had maybe half-two thirds AP/honors classes and the rest regular classes got better grades than kids with all AP/honors classes and better grades weigh more than having the hardest possible schedule. Those kids also tended to be more well-rounded than the "all AP/honors kids" and they had more to write about in their essays, better ECs, ect. Of course there is the exception for those kids than can take all APs and maintain a 4.0. Anyway, find that balance. Don't over work yourself.. your GPA is more important. Your SAT scores are pretty good, what about subject tests? AP scores?
I would suggest trying to form a close relationship with some of your teachers next year so you can get a good recommendation from them. Also volunteer work, travel, research, internship any of that sort of thing can go a long way if presented in a manner that optimizes its use. Don't join every club, just be really involved in what you do. I wish I could give you better advice but the college admissions process is much more complicated than people make it out to be; test scores don't matter as much as you may think and neither does 5 APs vs. 6 APs (i'm sure you know what I mean). You just got to do what you love, do the best you can, and apply to many schools and hope for the best. I know this sounds cliché but do something that sets you apart. I know for me when I applied to college I wrote about how I was foster care kid for one of my essays. I think that set me apart from others in the admissions process. But, it really depends on how you write. Anyway, good luck!

I am an international student from Dubai. Coming from such a huge city to William and Mary was a big cultural shock to me. On the one hand, I am surrounded by smart, competitive, and talented peers. I have made really close friends with people of all backgrounds. However, WM has it's downsides. The campus offers lots of activities and clubs but they can not compete with bigger universities.  The majority of students are in-state so the college body isn't that diverse. I think the key part of campus life in WM is that you get to choose what you want. You can choose to join one of the fraternities/ sororities, you can get involved with alma maters production (a popular campus wide programming body that creates alcohol alternative programs) or you can join one of the many clubs and organizations on campus.Academics are a key part in the average WM students life. You will experience stress, you will focus too much on grades. The environment is competitive and it will rub off on you. This has its positives: you are more driven; and negatives: it will seem hard. To me, personally, it has helped me grow as a person.Besides this the campus itself is beautiful, and since WM is so small you will get to know and see your classmates. If you do come here, be active in many clubs and get out of your comfort zone!

SAT Scores? To get into William and Mary?

Well, 2100 should get you in (That's the score I got, and I got into William and Mary). If you are in the middle 50% for the SAT scores (which I think is around 630 to 730 in each of the three areas), then you should have a good chance, although it would be better to be toward the upper half of the Middle 50%. But if you are an out-of-stater, competition is really fierce, so a 2100 might get you nowhere.

One of my friends was ranked in the top ten in her class of more than 400, but she didn't get in with an 1200 (critical reading+math). She had great extracurriculars, along with many AP classes in which she earned high grades. Probably the SAT ruined her chances. So yes, the SAT is capable of breaking your application. Therefore, you should study hard for the test.

Can I get into the College of William and Mary? What is the average gpa of a incoming freshman?

I graduated from William and Mary last year and I'm going back to my old high school soon to talk about the college admissions process so I've been studying a packet of information sent to me by the College.

The strength of your curriculum and your academic performance is one of the first things considered. So, if you're taking all easy classes but have an A in all of them, you're not as likely to get in as someone who's taking a heavier course load but has slightly lower grades. In addition, your guidance counselor provides a description of your school, its makeup, and competitiveness to get an idea of your educational environment. SAT scores are also a factor, but less so. With a 4.1 or a 4.3, I think you're fine. I know people who got in with less than that.

But GPA really is not the most important thing. W&M admissions is becoming increasingly competitive and there will be lots of people with GPAs of 4.1 and 4.3 and 4.5, valedictorians and salutatorians, etc. applying. You have to set yourself apart from those people with your application. A clearly written and thoughtful essay goes a long way in that regard. You have to remember that the person reading your application has read many before yours and will read many more after, so take every opportunity you can to personalize it. Make them laugh, make them cry, make them think-- just make sure your name isn't forgotten among the thousands of other applications sitting in the Admissions office.

Good luck. I hope you get in. William and Mary is an amazing college and you'll have the greatest time of your life there.

The College of William and Mary is excellent for students who are serious about academics. Every class is taught by a professor, not a TA.  And the professors take the motivated kids under their wing and personally help them find internships and other relevant experience. I found the faculty to be amazingly accessible.  As an undergrad, I was able to write a chapter for a law professor's textbook, work as an environmental intern for the county, and other things.  Every teacher was accessible and available, even my professor who was also the Dean.  There literally were no exceptions.  That said, William and Mary is HARD, with some grade deflation. When applying to grad schools, I found that this was well known to the top schools. If you have top grades at William and Mary, you will be very competitive for the top grad schools.

Chances of getting into William and Mary?

I have a 4.0 gpa through junior year, got a 33 on my ACT and for the SAT's I got 740 in math, 690 reading and 680 writing (planning on retaking the SAT this fall) I have taken AP world history, biology, and chemistry and got a 5 on them all. I have taken 4 SAT 2's and my 2 best are math 2 and bio, both 800's. My senior schedual is hard with 4 more AP's. Im a little worried about my ec's, since I have been on two varsity sports, tennis and soccer, and I have been captain of tennis for two years now, and will hopefully be captain of both this year, and I have honor society, a good amount of volunteer hours, and work as a lifeguard but I'm not really involved in any clubs or student gov (my school is small and most clubs do nothing and the student gov is a joke). I know William and Mary is a hard school to get into, so answer honestly.
