How Hard Is Learning Violin At Age 14

How hard is it to learn violin?

It is one of the harder instruments to learn. You can learn where to put your fingers pretty easily, but actually getting a good sound and getting the notes in tune takes a few years.

Is 15 a very late age to start learning the violin?

Yes it is. Many people start at 8 to 12 years. So 15 is late. It depends on how fast and good you are with music. If you know how to play a similar instrument such as viola it will be easier. And i recommend you have to put in about 4-6 hours a day if you want to learn. When do you want to become really good? I think if about 25 you should be really good. I just think you'll be about 4 or 6 years behind with really good players. I know 3 great instrument players. They started about at 10 years old. So it's not that bad but they just got to play great shows about 7 years ago and they are about 30 years old so i say it might take a while to get to the pro maybe by the age of 30-35 years by.

Can I still learn the violin at the age of 27?

I will not lie here. "Learn" is a very ambiguous term that requires a more precise definition. Learn to what level? Is there a specific piece you want to play? The sad truth of the matter is that violinists who begin at a very young age have hand structures that are markedly different from those who begin in adulthood. As a child, your hands still have cartilages that later ossify into bones; these bones deform into certain shapes with repetitive exercises one often encounters with musical training. Same with pianists. A pianist's hand is markedly different from a violinist's, who has different hand structures from a flutist. Just as it's likely I won't be dancing the grand pas for the Swan Lake even if I practise, ten years from now, it's unlikely you'd be pulling off Berg's concerto. There are, of course, pieces you can practise and play; many of Bach, Kreisler, Mozart are certainly doable. You will be contorting your bodies into unfamiliar poses for prolonged time.I suggest you find a respectable teacher and discuss matters with the said person in length first. They have more knowledge about this than I do, and can point you in the right direction.

Am i too old to start learning to play the violin?

Of course you're not too old. I started playing at age 49, eight years ago. I play in a contra dance and folk band, plus give fiddling lessons.
I would highly recommend taking lessons no matter what age a person begins to play.
There are certain ways to hold the violin and bow that make a big difference in the sound produced. You also need to develop your "ear", a listening skill that allows you to play what you hear without reading the music. A good teacher will guide you and correct your mistakes before they stick. It's harder to re-learn and correct your bad habits that were picked up by teaching yourself.
The violin is not a fretted instrument so where you place your left hand fingers is very important to the tone. I know so many players that have terrible intonation and do not use the bow correctly.
Please don't turn into one of those.
Take lessons for the first year at least, then you can evaluate whether you want to continue.
Good luck, it's a wonderful instrument.

Here's a woman that I know at age 94 playing the violin. You have a long life ahead of you!

Good luck Natalie.

Is it too late to learn violin at 14?

It's NEVER too late to start an instrument. Two years, however, is quite a challenge to be at a "high level", even if you got a good teacher and practiced regularly. The violin is more difficult than most people think, because professionals make it look so easy! Don't pressure yourself to become a perfect player in a short amount of time, because it won't be very effective. Give yourself time to learn at your own pace.

Is it too late to learn violin at 14 ?

Of course, it is easier to learn when you are younger, but if you are really passionate about it, you'll be able to become a fine musician in no time!!
When people start young, they may be able to absorb things better, but the one thing that is a setback is that they don't like to practice... usually, it's forced on them by their parents.
However, if it is you who has decided to commit yourself to learning the violin, you'll be able to catch up to those who have picked up their instruments at very young ages.

So go for it!!
If you have the determination and the commitment, there's nothing you cannot do =D

Is 14/15 too old to learn how to play the violin?

No. You're slightly late in comparison to everyone else, but I would say 14-15 is still a good time to start. So long as you work hard on your music and actually practice, you'll excel and eventually exceed those who don't work as hard or practice. I've been playing for about 3 years, but compared to others that have played for 5 or 6, I am equal or far superior to them. The key to learning how to play an instrument is to work hard and to love what you do, that's all! Good luck to you and hey, maybe you'll become famous for playing. Who knows? The future is in your hands, it all depends on how you want to shape it.
