How High Should A Stop Sign Be From The Ground

Sedans that sit high off the ground?

This is a common question and a difficult one to answer as I do not know your budget or if you want a new or used.

There is a new category of cars called crossovers.
They are half way between and car and A SUV. I also do not know what country you live in so it is difficult.

If you want something small good on gas and compact the Toyota MAtrix or Pontiac VIBE are good. You sit about 4 inches higher than a regular car.

If you want some thing a bit higher of the ground look at mini SUVs.
Toyota Rav 4 is excellent. Honda CRv is ok.
Subaru Tribeca is not bad. Infiniti EX35 is very cool and would fit the bill. If you want something bigger a Toyota VENZA.

Good luck.

How much does a stop sign weigh including the pole it is mounted on?

It depends on the size of the stop sign (since the MUTCD specifies different sized stop signs for different uses) and what the pole is made of. Obviously the largest signs (used in situations where visibility is decreased due to things like speed) weigh more, and they will be mounted on heavier metal poles. Typically a residential area will have a smaller (24") sign mounted on a wood 4x4 about 6.5' above the ground. Couldn't tell you how much it weighed though. They're not terribly heavy since the metal is probably only 1/8" thick and it's plain galvanized steel.

What is the legal height of a stop sign?

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) provides guidelines for the installation of STOP signs.  A STOP sign in rural areas should be located 6 feet from the shoulder, or if there is no shoulder, 12 feet, and the height from the roadway to the bottom of the sign shall be a minimum of 5 feet. In urban areas, a lesser lateral clearance is permissible as necessary (i.e., 1 foot clearance from the curb is allowable), and the height shall be a minimum of 7 feet from the ground to the bottom of the sign.

High Output Alternator problems + ground noise?

I just bought a 200 amp alternator (iraggi) for my 03 tiburon. At idle (car in park) i'm getting 13-14 volts, as soon as the car is shifted into gear it drops to 12. This happens at red lights/ stop signs etc. ..

I have upgraded the wiring (big 3) to all 0 gauge (apart from the ground on the alternator, which had to be 4 ga because of my supercharger belt being in the way). The alternator is grounded to the ground strap.
Battery is a yellowtop.
The alternator already has an overdrive pulley on it.

Would an aftermarket s/c cause this?

I did notice that the guy that installed it for me did not put the bottom nut on the alternator so it is moving. I checked the belt tension and it is still within specs, but obviously I'm gunna have to install the nut. He didn't fuse the alternator (wtf). I'm also gunna try to get a 0ga ground on there.

One last thing, I'm getting really bad ground noise/ alt whine throught my components. I bought a GLI which did nothing. =(

Ne Sggstions?

Is it true that stopsigns with a white outline are optional?

False. If the sign says stop, then it is not optional, whether it has a white outline or not. The outline of a stop sign means nothing. What means something are the words that say "stop" and the color red. Those two things combined should let you the driver know that you are to stop. Stop signs are never optional. If you run a stop sign regardless of the outline, and you are pulled over by a police officer you will receive a fine and or points on your license. Also failure to stop at a sign will increase the likelihood of an accident. So forget about the color of the outline, you are to stop at every stop sign you come to.

Does shining your brights at a stop light when it is red change it to green faster?

No – absolutely not. The vast majority of traffic signal lights are controlled by inductive loops, which are electromagnets buried just under the road's surface. You can usually see the thin, black lines in the road at intersections. These electromagnets react to the presence of iron – and nothing else. When enough iron is inside the loop, the traffic signal controller box initiates its cycle for the light. Motorcycles, small vehicles, and vehicles raised above the ground (big 4x4s) do not register high enough to cause many lights to cycle. You can get a Signal Sorcerer® traffic light changer (often referred to as a motorcycle traffic light changer) and attach it to your bike and then the inductive loops will detect it. I use them on my motorcycles, and my small truck. I will never be without them on my motorcycles again!

Is it illegal to take a stop sign that was knocked down and laying on the ground? are we committing a felony?

You could be charged with theft. The sign is the property of the city. It doesn't matter if it is laying on the ground or standing upright. The right thing to do would be to call your city streets department and let them know the sign is down before someone gets injured at that intersection.

How tall is a traffic light (traffic signal) / How large is a traffic light?

I just spent a 1/2 hour searching for the size of a traffic light and I can't find it anywhere. I want to know how tall they are, and the diameter of the lights (the light as a whole - not a small light in a grouping of lights). Years ago I saw one on the ground being fixed and it looked about 5 feet tall. They look small on the wire up there, but how big are they really?! Please try to provide a source for your answer so that I believe you. Thanks!!

Can an officer cite you in a private parking lot for a stop sign violation on a public street?

If the violation occurred on a public street (usually defined as a public roadway or “highway” in statute), then yes, you can be cited for it. Just because you are stopped on private property, or at a different location, does not alter the fact that the offense occurred on a public street.Stop signs on private property are a different matter. In some states, stop signs on private property (such as inside a mall parking lot, or in an apartment complex) are not legally enforceable, and the only consequence for “running” one is that you be the at-fault party if an accident occurred. In other states (Florida is the first one to come to mind) stop signs on private property are legally enforceable just as if they were on a public street.
