One of the most revolutionary and simple inventions of the 20th century were the Tantlinger lock and standardization of the shipping container.[1,2] These were both designed "by transport engineer Keith W. Tantlinger when he worked with Malcom McLean, who developed the metal shipping container and later founder Sea-Land Service, a pioneer in intermodal transportation.[3,4] The Tanlinger lock is comprised of a twistlock and corner casting which "together form a standarised rotating connector for securing shipping containers" to each other. Together with their new standard shipping container, the twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) there was a way to stack like-sized containers to each other secure them in place on a ship. Similarly, they could be locked to truck or anything else for easy transport. There are now FEUs (forty-foot equivalent units—40' x 8' x 8'), which stack comfortably atop two FEUs. According to Rose George, author of Ninety Percent of Everything, "[b]efore containers transport costs ate up 25 percent of the value of whatever was being shipped. A sweater can now travel three thousand miles for 2.5 cents; it costs one cent to send a can of beer." And "shipping is so cheap that it makes more financial sense for Scottish cod to be sent ten thousand miles to China to be filleted then sent back to Scottish shops and restaurants than to pay Scottish filleters."[5,6,7]There are more than 100,000 container ships at sea at any one time.
