How Important Is It To Put A Title On Your Poem

How do I come up with titles for my poems?

When I write it's because I'm thinking about someone or something or notice something that catches my attention and I'll just start writing or dictate what I feel into my phone. 90% of what I write isn't edited. I name them after the subject and theme of the poem, or what caused me to write it in the first place. For example one day I was thinking about a few friends who have a hard time finding the good in things when the cloudy sky caught my attention. They would only see a gloomy say ahead and lower their feelings instead of something to raise their feelings and cheer them up. This is the result:GREY OR BLUEI sit and watch the clouds go by Grey and white spots in the sky  Little bits of blue about  Let the rays of sun shine out  Your spirit's really like the sky  Bits of grey and blue The grey is when you want to cry  The blue your love shines through  The sun peeks out now and then  Through the spots of blue  And its rays warm what they touch  And they are touching you  So if your life is like a cloud  And your spirits grey  Don't forget the patch of blue  For that spot is really you

Put quotation marks around the poem's title unless it is a novel-length epic poem, such as "Paradise Lost" or "The Divine Comedy." In that case, italicize or underline the title. Cite the poem with a parenthetical citation if you are using MLA or APA format.

Why didn't Emily Dickinson title her poems?

She was a slacker?

She wrote them with no intention for them be published, and when she passed her family put them in a book to preserve them and put them in order. Then they decided to try to get them published, and they were. Because of this she didn't give her poems a name and they were put in numerical order by her family.

Do I underline or put quotes around a Haiku poems title?

Quotations and/or underlining are not necessary. Underlining is fine. Since you are not normally quoting in a title, quotations are not desired.

What is essential for a good poem?

First and foremost, one needs to know that poetry is something more than just random amalgam of words put together. Poetry is a feeling that one pens down with the motive and expectation to gratify the minds of his/her readers.A few things that contribute to a good poetry are-Theme- Put a title that you think is the central theme or that sums up the “gist” of all your lines below.Motivation - This could be anything! Could be a random passer by who grabbed your attention by a simple action of kindness/genorisity, could be a dry sandal tree with withered leaves but flawless essence , a lifeless but beautiful looking sea-shell, birth, death, a movie with an amazing crux, an incident that shook you, a beautiful mind, a highway, a lesson learnt that left an indelible imprint in your mind, Nationalism, etc etc.Rhyming words- Don't focus too much over the rhyming scheme. If you focus too much on rhyming scheme, you end up limiting your thought process, limiting the word- substitution or cut short the availability of better words.Simile and Metaphor- One needs to avoid the plain and simple lines. More deep is the metaphorical meaning of a poem, it seems more enjoyable and interactive to the reader.Just like the concept of “allegories”. You can include the lines that show comparison or similarities with the real life situations.Words- The words used shouldn't be too overused and one needs to focus on congenial-concrete words more. Eventually, using very difficult words should be avaoided. Avoid cliches and too mainstream words.

Do you put the Rime of the ancient Mariner in Quotations or underline it because its a relatively long poem?

Even though it's a long poem, use quotation marks. (You'd use underlining or italics only for a book-length poem. "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" was originally published as one of the poems in a collection of works by the author, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and his friend William Wordsworth.)
