How Intensive Is Blue Sky

A subway train has a sound intensity level of 90dB, and a rock band has a sound intensity level of about 110?

Actually Decibels is a logarithmic scale so not as simple as normal calcualtion... the actual answer is 100 times louder...

the scale which is frequently used by physicists to measure intensity is a scale based on multiples of 10. This type of scale is sometimes referred to as a logarithmic scale. The scale for measuring intensity is the decibel scale. The threshold of hearing is assigned a sound level of 0 decibels (abbreviated 0 dB); this sound corresponds to an intensity of 1*10-12 W/m2. A sound which is 10 times more intense ( 1*10-11 W/m2) is assigned a sound level of 10 dB. A sound which is 10*10 or 100 times more intense ( 1*10-10 W/m2) is assigned a sound level of 20 db. A sound which is 10*10*10 or 1000 times more intense ( 1*10-9 W/m2) is assigned a sound level of 30 db. A sound which is 10*10*10*10 or 10000 times more intense ( 1*10-8 W/m2) is assigned a sound level of 40 db.

So something 90db is 10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10*10 times more intense or 1,000,000,000 times more intense.
Something 100db would be 10,000,000,000 (10 times louder)
Someting 110db is 100,000,000,000 (10x10 times louder)

Observe that this scale is based on powers or multiples of 10. If one sound is 10x times more intense than another sound, then it has a sound level which is 10*x more decibels than the less intense sound. The table below lists some common sounds with an estimate of their intensity and decibel level.

Eating before skydiving?

tomorrow we are going skydiving, we are suppost to be there around 2pm, leaving the house at 11 since its a 2 hour drive. Is it best to eat something real small that morning before hand, or nothing at all? I never get air/car/boat sick but im sure the anxiety will upset my stomach a litter.

Will I be able to speak spanish fluently using Rosetta Stone?

Hi Dylan,

it is not possible to get fluent with any computer language program. It will help you understand the grammar, which is very important, but you won't get fluent.
Before the U.S. State Departments send their employees to overseas assignment to embassies, consulates, etc. they receive 600 hours of intensive training (classroom training, not some computer program). To be fluent you have to live in the country that speaks your new language for at least two years, and this is based on science.

Last year I spent 10 months in Central and South America, incl. 5 months of intensive (one-on-one) Spanish training, 20 hours a week. I am still not fluent, it just takes him. Nevertheless, to start with Rosetta Stone is a good beginning.

Good luck.

What are some techniques for writing intense, exciting action scenes in fiction?

What are some techniques for writing intense, exciting action scenes in fiction? The best action scenes in movies use audio and video to create an exciting sensory experience. How can we make written action scenes just as exciting? In my opinion, the key is movement. The type of unfolding you want sweeps the reader along, and doesn't give him too much time to catch his breath. What this means is that the dialogue and narrative has to progress at a pace — literally.Merely telling us that a car is being driven at breakneck speed doesn’t give us much of a sensation. If you tell us about how bumpy the ride is becoming, the passenger’s vision is blurred as the world passes by, and how someone might be scratching at the seat and grabbing the door handle, then we get a feel for the motion-sickness kind of speed. This is where the coveted rule of show, don’t tell (me boring bits) applies. I want to know about the action, not the delicatessen on the corner. I want to experience the thrill or the fear of being close up to the assassin, not read a description of a vendor in a blue shirt, brown shorts, and sneakers with purple shoe laces who is selling vanilla ice cream.Sharply focussing on the actual action/speed/sensation helps a person to prune unnecessary details, which only slow down the action. ‘Pan’ the viewpoint of your book back and forward. Describe the experience from different viewpoints without breaking the pace. Matthew, thanks for the A2A.
