If water evaporates at 100 degrees Celsius, how do the oceans evaporate since the temperature never gets this high?
If the temperature reaches 100 degrees and pressure 1 atm, water boils. But evaporation happens at every temperature within the range where water is in liquid state. This happens because there is always a possibility of a molecule on surface (liquid gas interface) to obtain sufficient energy to overcome the attractive forces and enter gaseous phase. Similarly, few water molecules from gas (air) can enter liquid state. Hence if water molecules entering and leaving the liquid phase is same, water will not evaporate. Instead if molecules entering liquid phase is less then water will evaporate. That is , if the vapour pressure of water is less than required at that temperature, water will evaporate.
