How Is Democracy Working Out For You

Is democracy working for India?

Before going over India here is the definition of democracy, “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.” So most countries call themselves democratic [even north korea]. But very few have them properly in practice. US being the worlds oldest democracy and India being the largest one have the democratically maintained the stature pretty well. The major problem with Indias democracy is very little involvement of people. Some vote, most dont and then they keep blaming without doing anything to change it.

Do you think democracy works anymore?

In my opinion Yes.Let me give you some examples.People say democracy is overrated but in my opinion without democracy people will still go to jail for posting something on social media thanks to SC for abolishing article 66A of IT Act.Superpowers like USA and other western countries give away right to vote to women after such a long time nearly 150 years in the case of USA after getting independence.things are small but it does matter. On this auspicious occasion on Dr, B R ambedkar birthday we have to thanks our freedom fighters and members of constituent assembly for drafting such a constitution which has enough checks and balances between all the 3 organs of Government.People say that because of Democracy we can't develop as fast as what China did in communist government but we Indians find our way in democracy,Because Democracy is the last hope to the poor and to the farmers because they know they have the say in matters. Thanks for A2A.Jai Hind.

Do you think a worldwide democracy would work?

No. DEFINITELY not!

Democracy is akin to two wolves and a sheep deciding on what's for dinner.

Democracy is great in theory, but it seems that the larger it grows, the more people become disenfranchised and enslaved by the system.

The only answer is a world compromised of purely COSENTUAL societies, and a very loose government that holds them together based on the mantra : Do No Harm

"For the greater good" can be so sickly mistranslated it's not even funny...
I think that mantra is much of the reason that much of the world has many of the political problems that it does.
Socialism is fine, so long as it is not enforced at the tip of the gun.

Do you think democracy is working or failing in Malaysia?

The surprise opposition victory in Malaysia’s general election on marks an extraordinary comeback not only for Mahathir Mohamad, the 92-year-old former prime minister, but also for democracy in Asia.Liberals have been in retreat across the continent for years in the face of rising authoritarianism and extremism, and the surviving democracies — especially in south and south-east Asia — have been looking increasingly fragile. But now Malaysian voters have decisively rejected Najib Razak, the prime minister who was once Mr Mahathir’s protégé but fell out with him over the 1MDB corruption scandal, and pushed the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) and its coalition out of power for the first time since independence in 1957.Yet the Malaysian drama is all the more extraordinary because of the record of its protagonist Mr Mahathir. He is no liberal democrat. In fact, in the 1990s he was one of the leading lights of the “Asian values” school of thought that explicitly rejected western ideas and respect for individual freedoms and espoused an authoritarian style of government for the supposed collective good. The future, not least the next few days, is therefore uncertain. Mr Mahathir has promised to arrange a pardon for one-time opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and to install him as prime minister, even though it was Mr Mahathir who sacked and persecuted Mr Anwar (now in jail for the second time on dubious sodomy charges) in the first place.Let’s wait watch and see how the coming events unfold .

Why do you think democracy works or doesn't work?

Democracy works first and foremost because people believe in it. If they lose their belief democracy will die. There are several things that need to be maintained if the people are to maintain their belief. Freedom does not mean that anything goes. The practice of the law must be maintained. There are opposing forces at work in any society and it is important that civility, respect, and a sense of equality be maintained by the opposing parties whether they be political or civil. What we have seen in recent years is a dominance of Corporate America over the interests of the average citizen. The skewed economy is one indicator of Corporate interest over individual interest. The founding fathers may not have envisioned this since, at the time of the founding, the United States was a frontier society. The first indication that greed and the interests of cooperate America was failing the cause of freedom was in the early 1900s. Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to try to control corporate greed. Then came the Great Depression and the work of Franklin Roosevelt to right the economy by making life more equitable for all.Today we have the same crowd whose main interests in life is to make money. There has to be a greater interest in society than money, but those who have it will never admit to such a thing. Until we defeat the concept that money is everything the prospects for democracy is nill.

"How does democracy work in the United States?"?

Court decision regarding warrant-less wire taping is Democracy working. Pres. Bush wrote a signing statement on the patriot act regarding wiretapping. Laws are written, by congress, passed in both houses by majority vote, then sent to the president to sign or veto. Presidents in the past have put signing statements on bills, but in this case The Statement gave the president power to wire tap with out a warrent. The Judge referrence to King was saying in America law is not a decree or order by a King., and President. does not have that power. Hope this helps, its your checks and balances.working.
