How Is Divergent A Dystopian

How is divergent dystopian novel?

A dystopia is a world or society (usually set in the future) where the government or some other select group has taken control and regulates how and where people will live. Freedom is eliminated as the government decides what is best for the people. Divergent is a dystopian novel because the world, the Society takes away freedom of choice and forces people to live in five factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite.

Hope this helps!

What are the best Dystopian novels, like Legend, Divergent, The Maze Runner, etc.?

Give "This Perfept Day" by Ira Levin a try.Best known perhaps for his horror novels (which I haven't read, but at least 2 were made into major movies, one - or arguably both - entering pop cultural vocabulary in a major way), he also tried his hand at writing a science fiction novel, and whereas that often goes spectacularly wrong - painfully wrong - when a writer from outside the SF community tries to write a science fiction novel, Levin did all the right things. He's got the science, and even more importantly he's got the exposition, indirectly from an in-character point of view (most non-SF writers handles the necessary exposition of a science fiction story terribly, overexplaining things, explaining things too directly, or using AsYouKnowBobbery). It's also a very good story, with some important points about both Communism and Christianity and their flaws and comminalities (I presume Levin is Jewish - someone who had grown up internalizing Christianity with all its stupidities could probably not have written this excellent novel). In the unlikely event that you can read Danish, there's also the untranslated (I'm fairly sure) "I fredens vold" by Jørgen Pagh, touching upon some of the same themes as "Perfect" but still being very much a work of its own (I cannot even know for sure that Pagh has read Levin's novel). My third recommendation is also Danish "Med åben pande", by veteran science fiction author (and even more so translator) Arne Herløv Petersen, about a nazified and united Europe ("Uniropa", with a flag that's black, red and white), full of black comedy, and a bunch of political and period references that makes me assume that it's very unlikely that Petersen has translated his novel into English. It's episodic in nature, more so than being one long coherent story, but is very good. In terms of tickling the writer in the right places, with its use of language and underplayed humour or black comedy, I'd say it's even better than Levin's, although the themes that Petersen touches upon are less general and less generally relevant than those of Levin. So, those are my 3 bids for best dystopian novels. I've read a fair amount of the genre, including most of the major English works, but I tend to have a low opinion of the more technophobic writers, since the root cause of technophobia is often science-iliteracy. I also tend to prefer non-dystopian science fiction.Overall I'd rank Levin highest, Pagh lowest, on my top 3.

Is the society in the movie Divergent more of a dystopia or utopia?

I believe Veronica Roth kind of answered this question in the Q&A section of Divergent. She said that iniatilly it was an utopic society, because everything seemed to be perfect and turns out to be a dystopia because the system was corrupted and they lost their freedom.

What is a dystopian novel?

The term “dystopian” emerges from the word “Utopian”, broadly meaning perfect, or flawless adopted into common terminology from Thomas More’s novel Utopia published around 1516, set in an imaginary town displaying a socio-political satire. The work “dystopian” in contrast to that alludes to something that is not an Utopia, is not perfect or is so drastically rigid that it’s like life in an autocracy, or so loosely held together that it’s almost falling apart.A dystopian theme effectively deals with the binary of existence of free will and the oppression faced by the cruel government that will go to any lengths to hold power over everything that it has accumulated (think Star Wars series). This type of setting works generally with the idea that the ordinary life that we live, with our beliefs and our political standpoints, all have been destroyed either due to a war, or the power shifting into the hands of conspirators who swear to keep it within themselves, producing only an illusion of free will (lol as if that exists now even?) One of the most famous, and I mean The Most famous book under this genre, which basically became a landmark was George Orwell’s 1984, and it’s witty introduction into our ordinary life the concept of “The Big Brother”. I will not give away anything, rather anything I mention here will fail to live up to the hype that this book feeds off, so all I can tell is that the setting is way into the future, when? where? You can’t know until you read it, and at hind sight the life of the citizens may seem methodical and well planned, productive until it begins to get darker.Other really famous reads are Aldus Huxley’s Brave new World; The Hunger games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins, which is mostly for young adults but if you’re not a very avid reader this would make for an easier and more entertaining one. If you’re looking for something more political, post war kind then The Man on the High Castle by Philip K. Dick is your thing; and then there is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, giving a feminist edge to this genre. There are way more books Search results for "dystopian" (showing 1-20 of 791 books) << you can search here than these from the top of my head.

Is dystopian overdone?

I finished a book that pretty much explores that whole realm of a systematic government in the future. I made sure it was nothing close to Hunger Games, The Giver, Divergent, ect, but is the idea overdone? & If it is then what is truly in unexplored genre? I think the futuristic books do well because youth is captivated by the future. Writing about the past is not as easy cause the past is already established..

What is the book Divergent about?

It's a dystopian love story... I liked it.

Here's the summary from Amazon.com

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Dystopian writing prompt?

I'm in the 9th grade, and need help with an upcoming literature assessment.
My task is to write an introduction to a utopian story, in a utopian world, with slight hints and foreshadowing to that world being dystopian (ex, Divergent, The Giver, The Hunger Games, etc).
Can someone please suggest a prompt, or an idea, for me to work with? Thanks!

Divergent vs City of bones?

Wow, tough one.
Divergent has only two books out, and the final one comes out this year.
City of Bones has five books out, and the final one comes out next year.
I'd say Divergent is better, so I'd read City of Bones first.
Also, City of Bones movie comes out in August. Divergent movie doesn't come out until next year.

Hope that helps.
