How Is The Economy Going For Dentists

Cons of being a dental hygienist?

Hygienists deal with bad breath, biters, some blood, saliva, scared/crying/screaming children, the work is very repetitious & generally the same from day-to-day, risk of carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.

But EVERY job has it's down sides! There are a lot of "pros" that come with this career too; such as: flexible hours, great pay, knowing a specific skill set, benefits, helping people improve their oral health, working one-on-one with patients, etc. This job is great for people who pay attention to detail and like working with their hands.

I'm not sure about the market in Atlanta, but in the metro area I know it is becoming more difficult to find a job. My best friend graduated from DH in May and is still looking for a job.

Good luck :)

How do you become successful in life and is becoming a dentist a good idea?

Becoming a dentist is only a good idea if you like working in people’s mouths. Also keep in mind that as economies slow down, people stop seeing dentists unless its an emergency as that is an area where people can save money since dentistry is always expensive. When the economy is going strong, dentists who are good at what they do make a great living. Success is not measured by how much you earn, nor your title, but by how much you love yourself and assist the people around you.

Is it boring being a dentist?

In my opinion -- no, not boring!  Many dentists continue to practice beyond the typical retirement age because they simply enjoy the work.  It's a dynamic, social, challenging career.  I'm learning more every day and having a blast.I suppose it can be boring for someone who doesn't pursue quality continuing education and does not like interacting with their team and patients.

It is too late to become dental hygienist?

Absolutely not! I am 37 with three kids and I am in the dental hygiene program right now. Getting ready to enter my last semester of my first year. I am not the oldest person in my class either. Most of my class mates are in their mid to late 20's up to early 30's.

The only thing that would make this an issue is if you do not take the chance because you will regret it later. You are not too old.

Good Luck.

Why are dentists so expensive?

Hi. Hope, by this time you would have gone through the other answers and got an idea of why dentistry is more expensive. I would like to tell you another perspective from patient's point of view. A dental check up is advised once a year to prevent complications or decay process. Consultations in India costs mostly around 100-200 rupees. But you are not ready to shell 100 rupees for your consultation  because you have to recharge your phone. You missed the yearly check up and somehow you are feeling sensitivity while eating sweets, drinking something hot or cold at times.  You go to a dentist and you are diagnosed with early stage decay. He advises you to go for a filling which costs around 500-800 INR. But,  you don't have money because you have to go to the chat shop nearby after filling petrol in your bike since your friends are waiting there. Your sensitivity from being occasional, becomes a major problem to you. You could not eat anything due to severe sensitivity and pain. This time your dentist recommends you to go for root canal treatment followed by capping of the tooth  which costs you around 8000 INR. You do root canal treatment for pain but you don't have money for crown because you have to go for a cinema with your girlfriend that week, and have burgers for you both at McDonald's. Your tooth fractures one fine day(remember you didn't put cap) and you couldn't eat anything due to pain. You couldn't sleep. Your Dr now tells that your tooth couldn't be saved now. It has to be removed. To replace it you have to go for a bridge costing 12000-50000 INR or an implant costing around 30000- 70000 INR. Now, you can see that if you are a patient who regularly visits a dentist, you could have prevented the decaying process itself, which costs only around 100-200 or if an x ray required price may be around 500 per year. Dentistry as such is not that costly but your IGNORANCE is. Please give it a thought. Note : The prices quoted here are just for explanatory purpose. It may vary, depending on the condition of your tooth, skills and experience of the dentist and the materials your dentist uses.

How inevitable is economic globalisation?

its a two pronged answer
international competition has made health tourism (as per your example) an 'economic globalisation' reality right now - we go to eastern Europe for dental work & Cuba for operations etc. that will not change. its not inevitable any more - that was the case 25 years ago - now - its current and fact

as far as cost - we are held to ransom by health professionals who are screwing the nation for their own gain. thousands of dentists earn over 100K per year and doctors earn the same amounts. we are a small country - (1/5 the size of Texas) & we cant sustain this - which is why the first bit happens in the first place!!

Dental assistants, hygienists and age discrimination?

Sounds to me you are angry because you can't get hired. Sorry but face the facts. You are almost middle aged so of course a 20 year old is going to get the job vs you because chances are they know more about technology and their field better than you do. So if you are talking about competence they are looking a better choice than you are. Plus you were an editor for a news paper. You have no experience in this field at all where as younger students are urged to get a job in the field before they graduate so they have experience. If I were hiring I'd hire a 20 year old that has experience in the field. Even if they didn't and you were equal job wise and education wise I would hire them because chances are they will stick around longer and won't get sick and have to leave.

Never mind then sounds like you are more jealous of a girl's looks you work with. you realize that dental assistants and hygienists aren't allowed to text and read magazines when they are working. So either you are lying about where you work or you are just purely ignorant. Also it's not allowed to have any relationship in a professional setting like that. ******* doctors has nothing to do with putting food on the table for a family. You are paid for your performance in your job. So if you are paid less then it's a fact that you aren't working as hard as some other people around there. Oh and I forgot to mention, another way I can tell you are lying is that there are only 2-3 dental assistants per dentist. :)
