How Long Before Bed Should You Take Melatonin

How long before bedtime should one take melatonin?

Although melatonin is what releases naturally inside us, to tell us it's time too sleep, there is no actual evidence melatonin supplements helps us fall asleep. That being said, it really does not matter when you take it, ultimately.Regardless, if you feel it works for you, whether it's psychosomatic or not, anything ingested needs time to get into your system to work. Some medications/supplements absorb faster than others, so it'll vary based on what you are taking, how much, and method of administering. If your bottle does not give a recommendation, or your doctor didn't suggest taking it & give you a recommendation, experiment. Everyone is different too; doses and how long it takes to work, can vary greatly by height, weight, metabolism, etc. One person might need only 5mg, and it affects them after 20 minutes, while another might need 20mg, and it takes 90 minutes to affect them.Since melatonin isn't dangerous to take (to the best of everyone's knowledge, anyway), and taking a lot won't do anything bad to you (again, to the best of everyone's knowledge), experiment… Take a low dose an hour before bedtime, and see if it helps; if it doesn't, try higher dose next time, and so on, until you find the dose you believe works for you. Regardless, it really shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes or so to have absorbed into your system. Still, you could try an hour before bedtime first, and then time from there how long it takes until you believe it's working for you, and adjust accordingly from there… So, if it started working after 30 minutes, you'll start taking it a half hour before bed, if it was 45 minutes, take it 45 minutes before bed, or if it was only 15 minutes, take it then.Honestly, asking questions like these, you shouldn't expect a specific answer to when, as everyone, again, is different. Someone the same sex, age, height, weight could say 10mg 30 minutes before bed, but it take only 5mg 15 minutes before bed for you, or maybe 30mg 40 minutes before; you just can't be sure. Same reason why someone identical in stats to you could eat 5 Big Macs, not exercise, and not gain an ounce, while if you ate half a Big Mac, you'd have to work out for an hour, and you still gain half a pound. Hahaha! Everyone is different. ;-)

How long should I wait to take 3 mg of melatonin before I go to bed?

I just took 3 mg of it as well. It's starting to kick in, took it 15 minutes ago. Melatonin is natural so it's ok to take. It's not to much. But yes chammomile tea is good as well. You might have to take it a few times for it to really set your cycle back to normal.

Why do they say to take melatonin and vitamin b6 before bed?

Vitamin B-6 is an important co-factor, but watch out for it if you are a woman around 'period' time. Because it is a natural diuretic and can cause you to be up a lot overnight. But it helps considerably for fluid retention, starting from the time of breast tenderness.
Safe? Yes, as long as you don't exceed about 300 mg per day.

How many MG of Melatonin is safe for sleep?

Try taking Valerian Root earlier in the Eve. to relax you. Then take Melatonin half an hour before bedtime. I take 9 Mg. of Melatonin myself and my Family Dr. knows about it and he told me that it is safe at much higher doses if needed, because it is a natural chemical that our bodies produce any way.But I wouldn't go much higher than 10 MG so that you won't become dependent on it.

Can I safely mix melatonin with Tylenol 3 before going to bed?

This should be fine. Melatonin is a sleep aid, but it is naturally produced by your body at nighttime.

Taking a prescribed dose of Tylenol with Codeine (Tylenol #3) with a melatonin supplement should not cause any problems.

If you are concerned about it, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist. If you normally take melatonin as a sleep aid, and have just been prescribed Tylenol with Codeine, you may be able to sleep fine without the melatonin, as codeine is a depressant and can make you drowsy.
