How Long Do Orthodontic Elastics Pain Last

How can I treat pain caused by my braces' elastics?

You can use regular painkillers. The same you would use for a headache for example. But don’t expect the pain to go away, specially if it is very strong. You should always give feedback to your dentist with the amount of pain you have, and he will prescribe the propper medication. If it hurts too bad, he probably went a little too far tightening the braces and elastics. The problem is that it will not hurt that bad at the time, it starts to ache about 1h later.Freezing cold water also helps. I use to keep a huge glass in my desk and drank it continuously to soothe the pain. I never liked to take meds.

How long does pain from using rubber bands on your braces last and how long till i get my braces off?

Any advice to ease the pain? It feels like someones yanking my lower jaw forward while pulling out all my teeth at the same time. It hurts so bad!

And do you know how long it will be before my braces come off? I am a "class 2" and my original treatment time is supposed to be 2yrs. Also, i never wore the rubber bands for the first 4-5 months i was told to but then my ortho got mad and i started to wear them - will this lenghten my treatment time?

How long does the braces pain last?

It varies because each orthodontist works a little differently. Some use more pressure than others. Also, patients vary in their sensitivity to pain. But generally, I have found that after a few days, the pain diminishes and disappears. Some patients never have pain. Also, as treatment progresses, most patients tolerate adjustments with less discomfort than at the beginning of treatment. What I mean is that after about six months into treatment an adjustment is easily tolerated that would be very painful if done in the first week of treatment.

I just got elastics for my braces. Is it normal to experience excruciating pain once I put new bands in?

I’ve never had elastics, only the usual wires and BOY DID THEY HURT!  Okay, maybe I was, and still am, a pussy, but after they were placed for the first time, I couldn’t eat anything solid for over a week. I survived on yogurt, milk, juice and soup. Even the pressure of my lips over the teeth was enough to cause a steady stream of pain (in addition to the dull constant pain). Plus, this happened at the start of summer break and my most favorite hobby at the time was snorkeling at the beach. I was all gloomy because of the pain but once we got to the beach the day after getting braces I began to cheer up. Ate my yogurt with fruit bits, put on my flippers, my nose plug, my water goggles… then I tried to get the snorkeling tube in my mouth! For those who don’t know, the snorkeling tube goes partially into your mouth and is held in place by your clenched teeth. I cried for the rest of the day, because the most vital part of my snorkeling gear was suddenly causing me excruciating pain! I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t snorkel, my summer was officially over! I sulked for most of the next 3 months… And the worst part was that every time it began to feel alright, I had to go to the dentist change the wires or replace a fallen bracket and THE PAIN WOULD COME RIGHT BACK!!!!!! Worst 2 years of my life.

How long does wearing rubber bands last?

I can see you wearing them for another couple months easily. I have been wearing them for over 6 months now and they are such a pain, but don't think that if you don't wear them your othodontist won't find out. The biggest mistake people can make when they have to wear elastics is not to wear them at all because they don't like them. Please don't think that you can trick your doctor by not wearing them and then wearing them a week before your appointment, or doubling them up the night before. Dozens of kids at my orthodontist are told that they are prolonging the time they have to wear braces because they won't wear their elastics. When I first started wearing them I had large elastics that attached from the top front hook to the second last bottom one and I had to wear them day and night for 3 months. Then I had to wear them for another month at night. After all that, I switched to tighter elastics that created a triangle on the top front hook and the two bottom front ones. I have worn them night time only for 3 months and still wear them even thought I am getting my braces off on the 20th. Your bite is one of the biggest things your orthodontist will check when he is looking at your teeth and if you are not ready to get them off, it is most likely because your bite is not correct and you need to start wearing your elastics more.

When will my rubber bands stop hurting?

Probably a day or two for constant throbbing pain. Anywhere from 3 days to a week for chewing pain.
If its just the throbbing constant pain, brushing your gums will help massage it (although it may hurt at first). Or use some ice or pain killers.
I dont think they'll stop hurting (when chewing) by Thanksgiving but the pain will become more tolerable.
Just cut up your food into small pieces, use the top of your mouth and tongue to dissolve and soften foods that can be dissolve/ softened and try to chew your food with the side of your mouth or the teeth that hurts less

How long do your teeth stay sore after getting power chain on braces?

ooh boy. that sucks. i'm sorry.
i've never had power chains, but i have had elastics.
since you have both, it might take a few days for you to get used to the pain. i'm sure it won't be much longer than a week.
but when you eat, it might make your teeth sore again.

How long do rubber bands on braces hurt?

I had braces a few years ago, and as it's not much fun now, it'll be worth it. The pain from rubber bands will subside and you'll be use to them in about a week. You can take them out to eat, just make sure to put them back on as soon as you finish.

But while your teeth ache right now, applesauce, mashed potatoes, pudding, jell-o, ice cream, milkshakes, some soft toast, cold drinks... foods like that are so soothing to eat when you're in pain. I lived off ice cream, it was the best. Heat therapy also works wonders, but a ice pack will work well, too, and and I would take three 200mg Ibuprofen for the pain. Best of luck and I hope your mouth starts to feel better soon!
