How long can small turtles go without food or water?

A normal healthy, adult turtle that has been fed properly during it's life will be able to survive for months without eating anything. baby turtles, will not be able to survive for quite as long as they need protein and food a lot more frequently than adult turtles do. Small adult turtles (juvenile ones) can go longer, especially if they are in a state of brumation Water is still needed to prevent dehydration. They may lose their weight and their growth rate will be reduced too.Usually turtles depend on temperature In climates with winter temperatures or low humid temperatures that go below freezing, most turtles of all types survive the climate without eating for as long as 5 months or more(during winter and rainy seasons). since they are cold-blooded(poikilothermic), their body temperature) drops below 7°C (about 45°F), turtles enter a state of inactivity called brumation. They become active as usual when there is a rise in temperature and the turtles turn comfortable. If they are living in a place with soil, plants with insects they may feed on them and survive for days. The situations will be a bit different during summer. My pet turtle went missing on August 24 and since then I used to search for him daily and finally found him on November 17. He survived for almost 85 days without food ( he might have eaten something as he was on my terrace...he may not have eaten too he is just 10 days old when he went on this adventure) he survived from cats, rains, birds and without food. I still can't believe I found him!!! He didn't grow in size. He became weak and he didn't eat for the next 3 days perhaps because of the new environment, now he is perfectly fine and enjoying with his two other friends ! (I named him Karna! Other turtles are Arjun and Krishna)The day when I found him ( after 85 days)Now he is enjoying with Arjun and Krishna  he became normal within 5 days.Image source: my gallery

What does it mean when a turtle's shell is soft?

Softshell syndrome is a major killer of young turtles, especially aquatics. Its real name is Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and it is caused by poor diet and/or insufficient lighting. In order to stay alive, turtles require a certain amount of calcium in the bloodstream. If they do not get enough, calcium is taken from the bones to maintain the right ratio in the bloodstream. Over time, the bones are weakened. If the shell feels soft, it means that the bony structure which holds the keratin shields (outer shell) rigidly in place is so badly compromised that you can feel the damage from the outside. In other words, the turtle's bones have softened, making the protein layer (shell) seem soft.

Tortoise or turtle? I've heard that tortoises are friendlier and more social, but turtles are less maintenance. Help please!?

I suggest a box turtle. They are terrestrial turtles that are active with a ton of personality. They eat almost anything, but a balanced diet for them should consist of a variety of insects, vegetables, and fruit. Some enjoy fish, some eat people scraps. They are entertaining to watch and often interact with their owners.

Tortoises are not very active and water turtles aren't very interactive. Tortoises, with the exception of the red-footed tortoise which has been documented eating meat, are strictly herbivorous. Water turtles are usually omnivorous leaning towards carnivorous. Water turtles aren't super low-maintenance. No matter what kind of filter you get, they will manage to dirty that water quicker than you'd think. But tortoises can get their cages pretty dirty as well.

Water turtles usually have no interest in being held or playing with their owners; your role in their life is to bring them food. Many of them will struggle and try to bite if they aren't interested in your affection. That doesn't mean they're not fun to watch. Tortoises are more interactive but can get a little boring because they do everything slowly. If that kind of easygoing pet fits with your lifestyle, they can be a great pet for you.

The reason I suggest box turtles is that they have all the best traits of turtles and tortoises with some unique parts added in. They're great pets, in my opinion.

Keep in mind that turtles and tortoises have extremely long lifespans. Chances are that if you get one, it will outlive you. You probably will have to include the animal in your will and make arrangements for unforeseen circumstances.

Are turtles hard to take care of?

No i have 6! all you have to do is feed it every day and clean its water every week

If a turtle is flipped on its back, is there any way for it to survive?

Yes, they should be able to right themselves. I sometimes turn them over to verify that they can as a sort of health check. When I first met my turtle, I used to pick her up when she flipped over. Sometimes I still do help if she’s a in a tough spot but I encourage her to learn how to do things. They basically use their head and neck in conjunction with their arms and legs. It’s harder for them to breathe upside down, it’s more labored but does not completely stop. Perhaps some turtles and tortoises have a harder time than others, perhaps some can’t breathe at all upside down. Either way, they can hold their breath for a really long. The biggest hazard is if they flip over in shallow water as opposed to on land or in deep water. In the latter case where there is a lot of water (much more than the turtle’s length or height) they will automatically right themselves under water. However, in shallow water they can drown because it’s really hard for the turtles to flip themselves over in that scenario. That’s why it’s even more dangerous than having a really deep tank. If they are stuck upside down in a puddle and they can’t get their nose above water, they will drown if nobody is there to save them.
