You'd be better off doing them yourself by either letting them freeform or giving them a start by twisting ONCE. retwisting puts too much tension on the scalp causing traction alopecia. Salons, barbers, locticians, etc use and promote the most harmful, damaging methods, they just wanna take your money. Dreads are and should be FREE. Locticians use methods like wax and "locking gels" which are nearly impossible to remove and make dreads retain moisture causing mold and dread rot over time. They also recomend going months without washing which is gross and won't help your hair lock up at all. Clean hair knots and locks the best, not greasy unwashed hair. I wash mine with residue free shampoo 2-3 times a week and have since I stopped brushing. Another technique locticians like is interlocking. This is when the dreadlock is pulled trough a split in the root, this makes the dreads too tight to the scalp, another way to get traction alopecia. It also makes holes and weak spots in dreads.

It has been about a week since I did my dreadlocks for the first time and they are extremely fluffy still and will not lay flat. My hair goes down to about my shoulders. Will it lay more flat once I wash it for the first time or does it just take a while for them to lay down?

Ok. Step one. Don't listen to either of these people, as they clearly never had locs. Keep your hair clean, as you would the rest of your body!!!! Locs are not dirty unless YOU are dirty! Next, you need enough hair to twist. IF you choose to twist. I chose to freeform my locs. Basically I just washed and conditioned my hair as usual, but skipped the combing part. Soon, my fro started to knot up, looked like crap to everyone else for a bit. LoL! But, as the months went by, they got more and more awesome. People STILL talk about them now and I cut my hair nearly a year ago! But for a more controlled look, you'll need to twist, braid or get comb/finger coils. And for that you'll need at least an inch of hair. If your not comfortable doing them, go to a salon. Now the hair dresser may play into that same ignorance and say to keep it dirty. Don't do it!! At any time you feel the need to wash your hair, WASH YOUR HAIR!! Gently, focusing on your scalp mostly. Some twists may unravel. Just retwist them. Simple. And don't pack your hair full of beeswax. A light holding agent- or even just oil and water will suffice. But no matter what you do, please keep your hair clean.
