How Long Have You Had High Blood Pressure

I have high blood pressure at age of 25. How long can I expect to live?

In my teenage years, my blood pressure was taken by a nurse at a health check. I then heard her whisper to the doctor conducting the medical examination, “Did you ever see blood pressure like that?”The doctor stared into space. I presumed that it was good, because I was well into physical fitness. However, a few years later, I failed to get into the Royal Navy because of high BP, which astonished me, because I had just run a marathon in 3 hours 16 minutes. Not brilliant, but I was on the 92nd percentile of the field of runners.Forty years later, when I was 60 years old, my sister, who is a staff nurse, took my BP when I was visiting one Christmas. It was over 200 by 100. All she said was, “See your doctor.”I then finally started getting concerned and bought my own BP monitor. The highest I recorded, was 237/125. The doctor put me on 2 pills, Amlodipine and Simvastatin. I continued on these for about 6 years. Then, I was in the local hostelry and two 24 year old soldiers walked in. They were very fit and we're talking about the level of physical fitness, they had attained. After one or two beers, they challenged others to a push-up or press-up competition (they were US soldiers). Long story short: at age 65 years, I won with 79 press-ups in 60 seconds and my best opponent only made 63.Thinking, that I was cured of high BP, I immediately went to my doctor to get off the pills, because it was getting tedious taking them. The doctor put me on 24 hour monitoring and after that recommended that I should have an additional pill, Lisinopril. My BP was still ridiculously high. All I can say is that I am 68 years old and still alive as of writing this. I keep taking the pills and by the way I have maintained a fitness regime throughout my life and hope to live a lot longer. My BP still causes alarms, but it is possible my fitness regime is saving my life.

How long do you have to have high blood pressure before it causes death?

High Blood pressure DOES NOT usually cause death. It is called silent killer because it silently brings you nearer to death by causing long term damage to the organs like Kidneys, eyes, brain, blood vessels, Heart, Liver, etc.the damage to the organs then reduces the functioning of these organs which then predisposes the body to have complications when body is under physical or mental stress. Most of the body organs have excess capacity which is 3–4 times more than what is needed to maintain essential life functions. Hence we do not feel anything when our body is undergoing some stressful events as the organs can compensate for it.Long standing blood pressure for many years can reduce the capacity to such an extent that even minor stressors can cause overload of the organs leading them to have failure. Many of these events can be fatal or your body can recover with proper medical management & treatment.Usually it may take around 10–30 years after the development of hypertension to reach this stage but it can be everted easily if proper lifestyle advise & treatment for Blood pressure is followed. ( yes taking medication for blood pressure does help in reducing the complication, so please take your medication even if you are feeling totally OK)It can cause death directly if your blood pressure reaches very high levels, in which case it can cause excessive loading on your heart or brain which can then cause brain hemmorhage, excessive brain damage or sudden heart failure.

How long does it take for high blood pressure to kill you?

I am 20 years old and for the past couple of months my blood pressure has been unusually high. Earlier today I got it checked and it was 158/128. I was then prescribed medication which I will begin taking at some point today. My question is: how long does it take for blood pressure to do real damage? Does it only take days or weeks or does it take a real long time to build up?

How long does it take high blood pressure to cause a problem?

It depends on several factors and is different in every individual. You need to know how long the person has had high blood pressure? How severe it had been? In other words what are the numbers? Low, medium, high, very high etc. What other conditions (co-morbidities,) the patient is suffering from. Do they have diabetes, higher lipids, obesity? Do they smoke and drink excessively. Even the mental state can be a factor and many other factors. This is NOT something you want to ignore (especially when it can be treated).
