How Long Should I Let My Perm Rods Sit In My Hair

How do I get a perm out of my hair?

A perm* is hair service in which the hair is rolled on rods, and a chemical, usually ammonium thioglocolate, is applied to the rolled hair and allowed to sit for a prescribed amount of time. This first chemical breaks disulfide bonds within the structure of the hair, preparing it to take its new shape. The thio is rinsed away throughly while the rods are still in, because at this point the hair is very fragile and soft. A neutralizer is a applied which locks the keratin into its new shape, and rinsed away, and the the rods are removed. At this point, your old hair shape is gone. It has been permanently restructured from the inside. The only way to truly remove it is to cut it off. There are two options if you've received a perm you dislike. Option one is to blow dry and straighten your hair after you wash it, so the curls cannot be seen anymore. Water and heat also weaken disulfide bonds, temporarily. The perm will still be there. You'll require a hair dryer, flat iron, brushes, and heat protecting styling products. There are youtube videos to teach you how to blow dry and straighten if you are unfamiliar with techniques. The second option is to call the stylist and see if they can loosen the perm. If your hair is in good condition, the stylist can apply the same perm solution as before, but either with larger perm rods or by applying it to your loose hair and combing it through until the curls loosen, and then neutralizing it into this looser shape. This will not make your hair straight again and could cause more damage.I would recommend the healthier and cheaper blow-dry styling option over the re-perming option.*As an aside, a sodium hydroxide relaxer is sometimes called a perm, because it permenantly straightens the hair. Sodium hydroxide is in no way compatible with ammonium thioglocolate and will cause catastrophic damage to the hair if the two are layered over one another. The same rules apply, though. Once the disulfide bonds are broken by sodium hydroxide, they cannot return to their natural state unless grown out and cut off.

Should I wash my hair before a perm?

Actually, before any perm service you want to clean the hair thoroughly. In fact, most salons will shampoo the hair using a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess oils and residue from the hair so that the perm solution can better penetrate the hair. If you are concerned over keeping the hair safe and healthy, you can give yourself a deep conditioning treatment a few days before the perm. Not washing the hair prior to a perm service can result in poor perm results. Oils and product build-up can prevent the waving lotion from penetrating the hair shaft and can keep the hair from conforming properly to the shape of the perm rod. This can mean limper curls and results that don't last as long as desired. For coloring, you want the hair to be clean and dry before you apply the color. You should shampoo the hair the day of your appointment provided you have enough time to make sure the hair is fully dry before your appointment (or the time you plan to color yourself). Avoid using styling products before a color service as anything that coats the hair surface can prevent the color from penetrating and lead to uneven color results.

Rod size/ hair length Perm ?

Is it possible to get a perm done on shorter hair (1 3/4 - 2 3/4") ?

I have shorter hair, but would like it curly. Not poodle curly though. Was thinking grey or white rods. I know hair has to go around the rod so many times... If hair is 2" that means a 1/2" rod would wrap around 4 times. I would think that would be enough ? Would it be possible to use a larger rod ?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Can I perm my hair using a curling iron instead of a curling rod?

No. Not only are perm rods used, so are chemicals. Let me walk you through the process a bit. The hair is washed to remove any build up in the hair. Then hair is sectioned out and rolled into the perm rods. Once the rods are all rolled, cotton is wrapped around head, it is time to apply the perm solution to each and every single rod. Depending on the chemical compound of your perm, you will sit either under heat or not. After the appropriate time, you are rinsed well, pat dry and cotton is rewrapped around the rods. A neutralizing solution is applied to each and every rod once again and you sit for 5 minutes. Then, depending on your perm, rods are removed before or after a final good rinse. So as you can see there isn't a feasible way to use a curling iron to perm your hair. You would have to do one curl at a time, which is the ridiculous and unnecessary. Perm rods aren't very expensive. You could use a curling iron to curl your locks to give the appearance of a perm, but of course it will wash or flatten out.

Perm Rods without the paper?

I am doing my own perm rods and I forgot to buy the paper. Is it necessary to even use the paper for perm rods? I bought the purple rods.

Also what dryer setting should I use to sit under the dryer? Hot, warm, cold, high or low setting? Thanks for your help!

Can you really strip your hair of a bad perm with vinigar and lemon juice?

You can strip it with a high alkaline shampoo. Your best bet is to shampoo frequently with dish washing liquid. This is high in alkaline and will relax the perm. Just be sure to use a great conditioner, after.

Can you perm your hair to be loosly wavy?

I wanted to know if you can get a perm on your hair to be loose waves and also i wanted to know how long it would last if I did this?
I've never gotten a perm before, so do you just ask your hairdresser? What does he do to give you the perm?

Sorry...i have lots of questions :/

What would happen to your hair if you boiled it in water?

Boiling hair will break disulfide bonds, just like a permanent wave or a relaxer. Natural hair extensions are usually curled this way and African American salons are known to wrap hair around straws and pour boiling water over the hair in a shampoo bowl. I don’t recommend pouring boiling water on your hair, only because you can burn your scalp.I gave this to our students as a homework assignment. Wrap strands of hair around a permanent wave rod. Put the hair in a pot of boiling water for 30 minutes, Then set it out to dry.Boiling water will break the disulfide bonds in the hair, just like a permanent wave. Allow the hair to dry on the rod for 24 to 48 hours. The hair will draw oxygen from the atmosphere and neutralize itself. That’s why everyone says to wait 2 or 3 days before shampooing a fresh permanent. The results are a beautiful permanent curl. If you don’t believe me, try it.

I've never had a perm before. And I'm going for a spiral body perm. Any tips? I'm nervous about having it done

They'll put your hair into "rollers" then douse with the perm solution. After this is processed into your hair (10-40 minutes, depending on the coarseness of your hair -- coarse hair would take more time than fine hair), then put neutralizer in, which stops the perm process. Then they remove the rollers, and rinse out your hair.

1) Because perms use strong chemicals, if the solution gets on your face, it can burn -- if this happens, TELL the person doing the perm IMMEDIATELY! (They can get it off your face.)

2) If you have an allergic reaction (excessive itching, burning, anything unusual), TELL the person doing the perm IMMEDIATELY! A perm isn't worth the consequences of a possible allergic reaction.

3) Ask how long before you can shampoo your hair; it's usually a couple days. (If you shampoo sooner than they recommend, it can erase the effects of the perm.)

Please note: perms are damaging to your hair. After doing this, you have to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (preferably not a drug store brand, but from the salon). And make sure you use a leave-in conditioner!
