How much time should i have off school for a broken arm?

on friday at school someone pushed me and i fell on my arm. when i went to the hospital they told me it was completely shattered from my hand to elbow.
i had an operation on saturday morning to piece it together, pin it and put wire in and put a cast on.
it is extremely painful and i went to school on monday(even though my mum didnt want me to) but it was so painful. so i stayed off yesterday and today. i have been given lots of tablets to take by the hospital, but im stilll in alotof pain.
i go back tto the hospital on friday to get another cast, will it hurt even more then?

how long is a reasonable amount of time off?

also, im going away next friday, the hospitakl and airline have said if i get a letter from the hospital i can fly. but will it be painful durin and after the flight?

Do I really have to wear a bicycle helmet when I am riding to school in the Bay Area?

You only need a helmet if you value your life, your livelyhood, your mind and avoiding paralysis.I have been hit twice by cars while riding and in the process cracked two helmets.  The helmets cracks were severe as you could see daylight thru them.  Without a helmet I would have had severe brain damage, suffered paralysis or been killed.  I much preferred having a $40 cracked hemlet than a cracked skull. The most important aspect of a helmet is quality, fit and a tigh adjustment.  It should tightly and completely encapsulate your brain covering the entire forehead, the entire back of head and coming down to the ears on both sides.  It should be tight and unable to shift from side to side, back and forth and up and down if you take your hands and apply lifting forces.Again to reemphasize wearing a poorly fitting or loosely strapped on hemlet is not much better than no helmet at all.  Yes it will muss up your hair but this is a small concern in the big picture. For around $30 to $50 excellent helmets can be purchased.  Handle you helmet carefully, do not drop or bang it as it will not be as safe if compromised.   All helmets are single crash items, cheap to replace if any doubt even if no visible damage is seen.  You life is worth at least $50 I hope.

Should i go to school after getting a wisdom tooth out?

I am going to answer this question from being able to answer from both side - the patient and the dentist.

From a patient's perspective - I was fortunate enough that my wisdom teeth (3rd molars) came in nicely. I didn't need to have them surgically extracted. The dentist was able to give me just local anesthesia. I was in and out of his office in 30 minutes. I went back to work after my 'lunch break'. I did have some mild pain, but nothing I couldn't live with. Now, had I needed to take an exam, I probably would have used this as an excuse to not take the exam the next day especially if I had 4 exams.

From the dentist's perspective: pulling wisdom teeth can be simple and it can be very difficult. Sometimes (like my teeth) they come out extremely easily. Most of the time taking ibuprofen helps with pain control. But a lot of the time they are at least partially impacted which makes taking them out more difficult because they need to be cut out which in turn causes more trauma to the mouth which a lot of the time causes more swelling and more pain. Usually, when people complain about having their wisdom teeth taken out, it is because they were impacted and had to be cut out. This is what usually causes people to have to miss school/work.

Now, looking from someone's pespective who has gone to school for 21 years (1st through 12th grade, college and dental school), if you are in any amount of discomfort, you have had a bad night's sleep and cannot eat and your school will accept this as an acceptable excuse for missing your exams, by all means I say stay home form school. All these things can cause you to do worse on your exams than you would normally do. I am well versed on taking exams and know what it is like being in pain, being sleep deprived, hungry, etc when taking an exam and if I had the option to not do it, I would not do it!

I fell down hard and my head bounced off the ground.?

anytime there is injury to the head-it should be checked out by a doctor.

concussions can take hours and sometimes days to appear and they can range from mild to severe-causing comas. it sounds like you have a mild concussion.

i would report to the emergency room immediately-DO NOT drive yourself-if you have noone to take you-call 911

there are several head injuries you could have sustained

-subdural hematoma (collection of blood on the surface of the brain)
-concussion (ranges from mild headache to loss of consciousness)
-skull fracture
-subarachnoid hemorrage (bleeding inside the brain)

symptoms of the above are:
-headache (can be sudden or prolonged, can feel like popping or snapping sensation)
-nausea or vomiting
-decreased alertness or confusion
-DIZZINESS
-changes in vision (bluriness, double vision, seeing spots)
-neck stiffness

head injuries are unpredictable and can worsen in a matter of minutes. more than likely you have a minor concussion that will just take time to heal along with pain meds to help you cope, but it is VERY IMPORTANT that you get checked out-if you have bleeding inside your brain-you might not feel the symptoms right away and when you finally do-it could be too late to avoid serious complications from it-please go to the nearest emergency room

Go to school or stay home - bruised (potentially cracked) rib?

My horse kicked me last night, one hoof landed on my arm and the other on my ribs. I got thrown backwards with the impact, and couldn't stand or breathe properly.
While the pain isnt as intense as before, its still there. The whole right side of my chest is swelling up quite badly, and its very tender. Its painful to move (even simple things like bending over or walking) and with every breath, there is a dull throbbing pain in my chest. There is a faint purple bruise forming, about the size of my hand.
I decided to tough it out and go to school today, but it was a bad idea. I couldn't focus on my work and breathing was painful. I was dizzy, had a constant headache and almost passed out twice.

My parents know its painful, but they don't know how bad it is. I've tried telling them JUST how sore it is, but they just think I'm using it as an excuse to get out of school. They think it was just a harmless kick. I convinced my mom to book an appointment with the doctor on Thursday, because I know these injuries can look deceivingly harmless (my riding instructor cracked three ribs and thought it was just bruised).

How can I explain to my mom that I'm not just faking it? I'm actually in a lot of pain, and even some of my teachers picked up on this today.

Did I get a concussion and why does my head still hurt two weeks afterwards?

So, my first period class is band. Me and my friends share one of the medium cages that at the bottom of the cabinet. Two weeks ago I was putting my flute away and after locking the cage I stood up. The people above left their cage open (again) and I hit my head on the cage door. Now I don't remember anything right after that except that it hurt like h*ll. I hit it on the top, left side, slightly towards the front. I walked up to my 2d period class and asked my teacher if I could go to the nurse. She said yes and had someone take me down. When I was walking down the I almost fell multiple times. I went down to the nurse and explained (to the best of my ability) what happened. Then the nurse asked me what my name was and what grade I was in and I wasn't able to tell them. I had a major headache, my head was bruised (not bleeding), and I was pale a ghost. So two weeks later, my head still hurts just as much as it did right after I hit my head, I'm having trouble remembering things, and I'm feeling constantly nauseous. My friends just fell off a horse and got a concussion and I compared my symptoms to hers and they sound really similar. When the nurse called my dad I told him that I wanted to stay at school, and I convinced him I was fine. The next day I went to Washington DC with my grandparents for spring break, and still hadn't seen a doctor. (I know it was a stupid decision to not go to the ER, but I can't change what I did. So go ahead and call me stupid, 'cause it's just the truth.)
So here are my symptoms right after I hit my head:
Horrible headache, short term memory loss, very pale, post-traumatic amnesia, instability, bruising, slight stuttering, and irritability. I don't remember if I blacked out or not, so I'm sure that's not a good sign.

And two weeks later:
Constant headache, still bruised, nauseous, and short term memory loss. And you know when your talking and you just completely forget what you were just talking about, that happened three times yesterday.

Should I go and see a doctor, even if it's two weeks after I hit my head?
