How Long Until Benedryl Drowsiness Wears Off

How long would for benadryl to wear off after a dog has taken it?

Call an emergency clinic. It scares me that benadryl was used like a sedative. You might have overdosed your dog on the drug. It's great for allergies or bug bites but it won't make a dog drowsy in a way that you are wondering when it will wear off.

How long does the drowsiness from Tylenol PM last???

It depends on drowsy Benedryl makes you. That's the "PM'

Some people are not bothered by the benedryl, some need 8 hours sleep to sleep it off. You might want to try a half pill on the nights you know you will get less sleep.

If I take Benadryl before I go to sleep, will I be drowsy in the morning?

That is a good question! The answer is: the higher the dose, the longer the sleepiness. If you are over 12yrs and at least average weight for your age, 25-50mg of diphenhydramine (generic Benadryl) 30 mins before bedtime would be the usual dosage for mild sedation.

Very high doses like 100-200mg will cause much more drowsiness, however, the down side is that a person may sleep in for several more hours without an alarm clock or someone to wake them up in time in the morning.

Remember that diphenhydramine, (DPH) while only an over-the-counter antihistamine, has additive effect when combined with other sedating drugs like prescription pain-killers, anxiety meds or alcohol.

Side effects for DPH are usually unnoticible at doses under 50mg. anything over for adults may cause blurry vision, dry mouth and constipation, besides greater sedation.

Sweet dreams!

Can i take benedryl a few hours after i've taken reactine?

I have an exam tomorrow, but i just got a really bad allergy to something and i cant stop sneezing, its horrible. I took reactine in the morning, but i dont know if it's a 24 hour one or not because i cant find its box. Do you think taking benedryl at night would be fine, even if the reactine was 24 hours?

What would be a good way to reverse the effects of drowsiness caused by cold/flu/allergy medicine?

You really can't, you just need to wait for it to wear off: probably 4-6 hours depending on the formulation you took.

For the future, if you're concerned about drowsiness, avoid medications with benadryl (diphenhydramine), and chlorpheniramine. Both are antihistamines which treat the runny nose and sneezing. Instead, you can take non-combination meds (like taking sudafed and tylenol or advil by themselves) and take claritin instead or only take non drowsy cold formulations and take a claritin to treat your runny nose and sneezing.

Does benadryl make you sleepy? If so how long does it take before it kicks in? And how long will i sleep?

Yes. It makes you sleepy. As a chronic insomniac I would take it to get sleepy. Except for prescription sleeping pills, which the doctors don't like to let you have on a nightly basis and due to their high cost, the Benedryl worked the best and lasted 6 hours if I was lucky, but then again, I'm a hard-core insomniac and once was up for two weeks before I started taking medications.

For me, the Benadryl could sometimes take up to three hours to kick in, but if I took it on a semi-empty stomach and followed it with a few walnuts or something that gives your stomach something to work on, it would sometimes kick in, in a matter of minutes.

Benedryl has also been used in nursing homes for patients that couldn't fall asleep w/the sleep inducing ingredient @ 50 mg. The ones at the store come in doses of 25 mg. each and that is really all I ever took. Only on a few occasions, would I take two but found it wasn't necessary most of the time.
