How Long Will It Take Me To Learn French

How long will it take to learn FRENCH fluently?

It really depends on what method you use.

If you go to France and study there you could become fluent in 6 months.

If you stay in the U.S. and keep taking French classes throughout High School and college you still wouldn't be fluent--you would be intermediate to lower advanced (if you take it throughout college).

If you study French in the U.S. through hs and then take vacations to France or Quebec, use French with some natives or French speakers in your neigborhood, and study online, etc you could become fluent in about 2-4 years.
The thing is you have to use the language.
I've taken Spanish in middle school and high school for 5 years and still not fluent because I never use it outside of school and I never been immersed in the language.

How long did it take you too learn French?

As similar as any two Romance languages. I've taken Spanish and French (w/English as my native language) and in both classes people always say 'This is just like English!' and in French especially people always say 'This is just like Spanish!'. Personally I don't think it's true. Sure, there are certain things that are similar, but don't expect to go into French and know everything already because you know Spanish (even though that would be cool). You will have an advantage simply because you're used to conjugating and whatnot.

Go to byki.com for a great free online thing. I use it for Russian and it's fantastic. Also try frenchpod.com for a 10 day trial that you could just keep creating new email addresses and keep using, probably.

How long will it take me to learn fluent French?

I'm 16 and I really want to move to France. I read Les Miserables when I was 8, and ever since then I am one of the most die hard Francophiles alive. I took 2 years of French when I was in the 4th and 5th grades, but at the time was not motivated. I have learned a lot of words via Google Translate, Yahoo France, French Wikipedia, etc... I recently started taking French 1 with Bob Jones Homeschooling, and am speaking many sentences very well. I also own a French Bible which I read and a French-English dictionary. I agree, pronunciation can be a bit hard, but I really find it sounds good and it does come rather easy to me. It has so much in common with English. How long do you think it will take me to become 100 percent fluent?

How long will it take for me to learn French?

I would say that Kevin Lawson, "almost" has the hang of it, at least when it comes to the language side. I started off with taking very basic French lessons and then was lucky enough to move to a French speaking country. Total immersion is the best way to go, but failing that, there are so many methods that could be found on the internet and off-course in language schools. But what helped me to really get as comfortable as one could possibly be with a new language was theatre, radio and television. I also had the added advantage of always being put next to a grandmother that was going just a little senile and who would repeat the same questions over and over again. At one point I even used a "bartering system" of French for English, where I would meet up with a French speaking friend who needed to learn English. Coffee, lunch and going to movies became a bilingual adventure. You should also look up books and applications that have "learning by association" as a method. What ever you find, make sure it is enjoyable, because we all know having fun is the quickest way to learn."Courage et bonne chance"

How long does it take to learn French?

So I just starting learning French today and I have to say I'm way more excited about learning this language than I was learning spanish in High school. I'm picking up the language well and it's really gratifying that I'm absorbing this with no difficulty.

I know I have a long road ahead of me but I'm optimistic.

My question is: If I were to be consistent and dedicated at learning this language one hour per day, five days a week, how long will it take for me to become fluid in speaking/writing this language?

I guess the better question would be on average how long does it take someone to learn French?

How long did it take you to be able to read French?

Depending on how good you are at picking up languages, I'd say between 2-5 years. There are so many variables that it is impossible to tell, and without spending time in a Francophone country, you really will not be able to go that quickly. I have been studying French for 11 years, with 6 years of serious study and I can now read with relative ease. As you are older than I was when I started, I think you can do it quicker than that (I'm 18 now!). However, when reading I still have to look some words up. Films are a whole different level, and I really struggle through some films, particularly films such as 'La Haine' or 'Les intouchables' (great films!) because people speak very quickly and with strong accents or strange dialects (such as Verlan, a form of French slang... If you want to know more on this visit http://www.verlanslang.blogspot.com). I do understand around 45% - 85% of all French films now though, but to understand like a native, you really need to have spent time in France, although I suppose it is possible if you work really hard to improve your vocabulary.

Good luck!!!
