How Long Will It Take To Learn Basic Japanese

How long will it take to learn all the kanji in Japanese?

There are less than 2000 official kanji in Japan. So I'd guess the average person who grew up in Japan knows about that much.

Even Japanese have to look up kanji. A lot forget how to write them too because they're always using word processors that give choices.

What's "safe" to you? Most people studying Japanese as a foreign language can't even learn the official 1800 or so kanji. You'd be doing well if you could "know" all of the official kanji. You can find books on them.

Like others have said, there's a lot to learning kanji though. As opposed to Chinese, kanji in Japanese often have several meanings and readings.

It's good to learn kanji in conjunction with immersing yourself in Japan. That way you've got context for the kanji, which makes things much easier. You won't be studying things you don't need to study. Well, you will, but you'll have a much better idea of what's important to study.

Also, be careful of de-motivating people, especially Japanese ones. There are a lot of Japanese who will look over your shoulder while studying and say things like, "That's difficult. You don't need to study that." or "We don't use that." They're not always telling the truth, or they just don't know themselves. They're also unfamiliar with studying Japanese from a non-Japanese standpoint. The fact is if you're non-Japanese you're going to have to use some unconventional (to the Japanese mind) ways to study the language.

Also, there's no such thing as "all the kanji". There are countless kanji. There's nothing stopping anyone from using a kanji that hasn't been used by anyone for 300 years.

How long will it take to learn Japanese writing?

Based on my mother language Chinese , it's quite easy for me to learn Japanese writing due to something in common in both language.Hiragana and Katakana are originaed from Chinese cursive and character.2. Some kanji in Chinese and Japanese are all the same.だいがくせい 大学生/大学生/university students3.Some Japanese words are similar to traditional Chinese charactersにほんご 日本語/日語/JapaneseAbove all , it won't take me a lot time to write.

How long does it take to learn japanese and how do you learn it?

I had 3 years of formal study in college. 2 years here in the US, 1 in Japan. I also had conversation partners, so I could practice Japanese outside the classroom (very important!)

Honestly, I think I learned more Japanese in my first few months in Japan than from the 2 years of formal classes beforehand. There's a big difference between what you learn in class and how people speak everyday. Unfortunately you need that formal background if you want to really get good.

Another friend of mine moved to Japan with his wife. He knew next to zero Japanese, and was immediately enrolled into a nearby language school by his in-laws. When I met up with him again, we had both been in Japan for about a year, and his Japanese was better than mine despite only studying for a year. Of course he had a lot of help from his wife's friends and family, and he studied really hard too.

So going to Japan, and taking classes is definitely the key but be prepared for a lot of work.

How long would it take to learn to read japanese?

If you only want to read japanese just for that reason, I would suggest you just wait for the translations instead of learning the whole language. It will definitely take much much longer for you to learn enough to read the mangas properly, than it would to simply wait for the translations.

Unless you know Chinese, because most japanese kanji have similar meanings to their chinese character counterparts.

How Long will it take me to learn Korean and Japanese?

For Japanese it shouldn't take you a year and a half to learn Hiragana and Katakana.
There are 48 basic hiragana and katakana, and then the rest are simply combinations or adding, for example
ひ hi can become ひゃ hya when combined with a smaller や ya, it can become び bi when tentens are added and it can become ぴ pi when a maru is added. Then it can become びゃ ぴゃ bya and pya respectively .
Then not all hiragana are compatable with the smaller ya or the tentens or maru.
Kanji can take longer but if your committed it helps. Simple kanji should be used from the beginning to help, eg 日本 nihon should be used, not にほん for Japan. It just helps I think for future kanji.
They say that Hiragana and Katakana can be learned in 48 minutes, one per each, so 96 minutes in total. Unrealistic unless you've got a photographic memory :P
My friend picked up basic writing within a week, that was for 23 Hiragana and 12 Katakana. Learn them at the same time it will help. learning your name kn Katakana ka a great way to remember some Katakana characters! After the alphabet the language is quite easy - the past form is simply changing ます to ました for verbs, there's no huge gender difference like in French or Italian, the vocab is a bit more challenging but fun!

As for Korean, I've recently begun learning that as well. They say the writing system is quite was to pick up which is why there is little to no romanized dictionaries . I think the saying is something like the bright person can pick it up within a week and even the blind deaf and mute can pick it up within a month. I tried YouTube and there's a surprisingly good video, YouTube search Korean with Professor Oh and I think it'll come up .

Hope this helped!!!

EDIT: Rosetta stone can be useful if you learn with flash cards :)

How many months will it take to learn the Japanese language?

Thanks for the A2A!Learning is a continous and nonstop process. Apart from that bit, if you ask me, it takes about 6 to 8 months to study and successfully complete the syllabus of JLPT(Japanese Language Proficieny Test) Level 5, which is the elementary level, if you just concentrate on learning Japanese and are not involved in any other major tasks like homeworks from school/college or doing a job. If you dedicate 4 hours a day for 6 months, you can easily complete and pass the N5 course.I am taking a moderate condition in this case. If you are a fast learner and/or if you have a flair for linguistic abilities then you’ll need lesser time.ではごきげんよう! :)

How long does it take to learn Japanese and Kanji?

A lifetime. There are some other great answers in this thread. Here’s my contribution. An academic linguist would describe Japanese as one of the world’s simplest languages. However:it’s very different from any European language - the deep structure requires you to rewire how you say things at a fundamental levelJapan is very homogenous; not only are nearly all residents Japanese, ethnically and legally, but the education system is extraordinarily coordinated so all Japanese have an eerily similar level of cultural empathy with each other. This means that for almost all situations, there is a “Japanese” way of phrasing things that is almost expected. Your Japanese may be grammatically correct, perfectly pronounced, with appropriate vocabulary, and it’ll still sound odd to a Japanese person unless you’ve also learned the appropriate expression for the situation or feeling.learning the different registers of formality in the language requires, first of all, that you understand the social context of relationships and obligations in Japanese society; that in itself takes study and sensitivity for a non-Japanese personKanji can be learnt. It’s a lot of work… but easier than learning, say, traditional Chinese. But remember, to write kanji beautifully, or to write kanji fast but legibly… a Japanese person has a lifetime’s head start over you.But it’s an entertaining and satisfying journey!
