How Long Will My Guinea Pig Live

How long do guinea pigs in the wild usually live?

Like all animals guinea pigs live much longer lives in captivity than they would in the wild for several reasons:
1.) They are prey an animals fairly low on the food chain and are typically eaten within a few years of birth
2.) Depending on the year they can easily starve to death depending on food/water availability which varies from year to year
3.) Exposure to outside/other guinea pigs makes them more likely contract some sort of illness and die without treatment.
4.) Guinea pigs reproduce frequently in the wild and constant mating and birthing makes them prone to cancer in their reproductive organs (like with all small animals) so if the first 3 reasons didn't kill them within a few years reason 4 will have made sure they didn't live anywhere longer than 4, 5 years tops.

I hope you're asking this question out of sheer curiosity and not asking this because you're planning on "releasing your guinea pig into the wild", because there are so many reasons that never ends will for anyone.

How long did your Guinea Pig live?

My guinea pig died at the age of nearly 2. She had so much to live for, but I guess she didn't make it.

She died of birth. Yes she got pregnant by accident, but It still hurts like it's my fault.

RIP PIP! =(

How long can guinea pigs live?

Most guinea pigs are expected to live 5 to 7 years. Occasionally, the pigs can live over 10 years, if they are given proper care. Aging guinea pigs can suffer from cataracts, stroke, heart attacks, arthritis, dementia. My guinea pigs (3 of them) lived to be just over 8 years. So, I am happy to share some tips.1. Buy the largest possible cage to provide adequate room to exercise. Place the cage in an area and with enough light, and in an area your guinea pigs can see you. Use guinea-pig bedding bought at the pet shop and change it regularly so your guinea pig doesn’t live in its own feces. Place the cage in a room with a stable temperature. Guinea pigs can't stand too high or too low of room temperature.2. Provide a balanced diet. Grass hay should be a main staple, and I think highly of the brand Oxbow. Well washed vegetables, including leafy greens are a treat for guinea pigs. Bell pepper is a good choice because it is high in vitamin C and low in Calcium, as well as green leaf lettuce, escarole, red leaf lettuce, cilantro, and curly endive. So, be sure to feed your pet vegetables high in vitamin C on a daily basis since pigs are not able to produce this on their own. Avoid food with large concentration of calcium, a potential cause of urinary infection. You may include fruit such a apples, strawberries and bananas in small quantities a couple time a week.3. Add a few toys such as ball or tunnels. Make an obstacle course with various objects. Be sure your pet has some good places to hide.4. Be sure to own more than one pig. Guinea pigs are very sociable and love company (including your company). Keep guinea pigs of the same sex or already spayed/neutered pairs. While guinea pigs are social animals, they can still fight with each other.5. Play regularly with your pet. Guinea pigs love action and will welcome a good playing session with you. We found our animals enjoyed music like soft jazz, classical and smooth R& B. If you take them in the garden, be sure to protect the pigs from predators such as cats or birds.6. Find a veterinarian who has expertise in exotic pets. Don’t wait for a problem to happen to bring your guinea pig to a specialist. Bring your pet regularly to the vet (perhaps annually) to check-up to detect potential health issues, or sooner if you think pig has issues.

How long can guinea pigs go without hay?

Well, they ran out just a little bit ago & they didn't get that much of it. My mom doesn't feel like going to the store because it's late so we have to get it tomorrow. Can they survive without it for a day?
Also is Kaytee Timothy Hay a good brand? Thanks!! :-)

Can my Guinea pig live alone?

I got a baby boy Guinea pig today hoping he would bond with my two existing boars and it went terrible. They do not get on at all.

I am debating whether or not I go and get another little boy who was in his home before (so that he knows him) and because they’re both babies they will get on well together. OR, I could just have my baby boy now on his own and give him extra fuss and attention, although I may feel guilty about him being alone..

I’m just worried if I get him a baby friend that he was with previously they may fight and I’d have to take the baby back..

Thoughts??

How long can guinea pigs go without food?

A guinea pig would go into irreversible liver failure if without food for 16 hours. They need to keep the gut working by continual eating or they risk gastrointestinal stasis, which can kill. It is important that guinea pigs have access to hay, fresh water and fresh food containing vitamin C at all times. If a guinea pig is not eating, it is important to consult a veterinary surgeon. Dental malocclusion is a common reason for inappetance in guinea pigs; burring any overgrown teeth or dental spikes/spurs might be required.

How long can a guinea pig live without food or water?

Death from lack of water takes 36-48 hours of being completely out . Death from lack of food takes 2-3 days. However, permanent damage comes much sooner. Board your pets or get someone to come in and feed then even if you have to pay a pet sitter). Doing anything else is sentencing them to a slow and very unpleasant death.

When we travel (which we do a lot, we have a sitter come in daily to take care of our cats, guinea pigs and rabbits. 24 hours is about the limit of time to trust water bottles are working, that food is clean etc.
